Resources (in the game, they are simply called "loot") is a complete innovation to the LEGO games and this is the key information about them, which you should keep in mind:

• There are sixteen different categories of resources (e.g. gold, stone, wood or food). Supplies of each resource are collected separately. You can, of course, view them at any moment in the game - you need to hold down the character switch key and, in the drop-down menu, you need to select the option connected with resources (Loot). This will display the table shown in the above screenshot.
• You obtain resources in a way similar to obtaining of studs, i.e. mainly by means of destroying objects in the environment, solving minigames and by defeating opponents.
• Unlike studs (coins), you do not lose resources after your character is deprived of all the health hearts.

I have already mentioned that you obtain supplies in a way very similar to obtaining of studs (coins). Still, there are methods that increase the probability of finding the particular type of supplies and it is worth remembering, especially in situations, in which you need to obtain them in order to progress in the storyline, or forge a specific item in the Free Play mode:

• If you want to obtain various ingots and crystals, you need to visit a cave and a mine. to complete mining minigames (the clusters of bricks that you use the pickaxe on).

• If you want to obtain supplies, like e.g. bread, carrot or fish, it is a good idea to visit villages and towns. There, keep an eye out for, baskets filled with the kind of supplies that you are looking for.
• If you want to obtain wood, stone and rope, it is a good idea to smash the wooden objects that you fid throughout the game world.
• If you want to obtain meat and hides, it is a good idea to take part in the fights with goblins, which occur at a regular basis. These monsters often drop the above.

An alternative way to obtain supplies in large quantities, is to barter with the merchants that you meet throughout the game world. Each such character usually has several tens of pieces of a rare item, in stock. Still, you need to keep in mind that if you want to obtain that supplies, you will have to spend large amounts of supplies of another type. As a result, it is better to consider if you are really going to profit from that exchange.

Example window of resource spending

You do not gather resources only for your own satisfaction, because they also have a practical use. They can be used for building of new objects (Craft Table), crafting of single items (after you visit the blacksmith) or feeding the selected members of the party (e.g. Bombur).

In the situation, in which you do not have the required number of resources, at the moment of starting a given action, you will be disallowed to progress. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, this does not make you start the tedious process of searching for the loot all around the game world. Usually, all you need to do is destroy the objects in the immediate area (this mainly concerns the missions of the storyline mode), thanks to which, by pure luck, you obtain just the resources that you need.
