Circumstances of the damaging of the Guardian Shield
The Guardian Shield is Kratos' basic piece of equipment, and also a family heirloom to him. It is available from the beginning of the game, albeit it is a weak level 1 shield.
The shield becomes damaged during the confrontation with Thor - the second boss of the game. This happens in the final phase of the encounter.
From that boss battle onward, the shield appears in your inventory as damaged. You can't use it to block attacks in further battles.
Giving the shield for repairs and crafting a replacement one
After you reach the House of Sindri for the first time, friendly dwarves will take the broken shield and promise to fix it. The service is free of charge, but it is going to take a while for the work to be completed.
You'll be given the opportunity to get a replacement shield, and you can choose from 3 models with different looks and statistics. The crafting reagents needed are provided, and you don't have to worry that you'll be without a shield during further battles.
Repaired Guardian Shield received
The repaired Guardian Shield will be given to you after starting The Word of Fate story quest involving another excursion into MIdgard. Sindri will give it to you when leaving the dwarven house.
The repaired Guardian shield is a level 4 item. You can upgrade it further when shopping at dwarven stores by spending crafting materials. However, using it is not mandatory - if you have a better shield, you can go on and use it instead of the Guardian Shield.
