Spoiling food

Fruit doesn't spoil when it's still on a bush. This changes once you put it in your inventory:

  1. Fruit - time to spoil after collecting: 12 minutes.
  2. Fruit - time to spoil after boiling: 24 minutes.
  3. Insects - time to spoil after collecting: 8 minutes.
  4. Insects - time to spoil after boiling: 24 minutes.
Food doesn't spoil when stored in a locker - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

Food doesn't spoil when stored in a locker. When fully spoiled, the item turns into Rotten Food. You can boil food by placing it in an electric cooker and using clean water - boiling removes negative modifiers, viruses, and makes the food last longer before spoiling.

Boiling food in dirty water always results in a Contaminated Meal. Boiling contaminated or rotten food again in clean water results in an Overcooked Meal.

Acquiring and purifying water

Water is stored in bottles you can craft with synthetic materials by using a fabricator. You should have at least two bottles with you - one for clean water, one for dirty water.

The most basic way of acquiring water is finding dishes, like the one pictured above - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

The most basic way of acquiring water is finding dishes, like the one pictured above. They only contain dirty water, however, which must be filtered. Drinking dirty water lowers your health and using it for cooking creates Contaminated Meals.

You can also gain dirty water by using a Water Purifier - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

You can also gain dirty water by using a Water Purifier. Place a Purifier Membrane inside to start collecting water. One membrane is enough for 5 units of water before it needs replacing.

You can then filter dirty water with a Water Condenser - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

You can then filter dirty water with a Water Condenser. Put dirty water inside and it'll quickly be turned into clean water. This device doesn't consume any other resources - though you need an empty bottle to store the clean water in.

Canned water is considered clean, can be drunk directly or used for cooking.

Cooking

Before you can start cooking, you must build an Electric Cooker - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

Before you can start cooking, you must build an Electric Cooker. Cooking improves the food's parameters, makes it last longer before spoiling, removes negative modifiers and viruses. Always use clean water when cooking.

Place the item you wish to cook in the upper slot, then place a bottle of clean water or canned water in the lower slot - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

Place the item you wish to cook in the upper slot, then place a bottle of clean water or canned water in the lower slot. Now just wait a moment to receive your meal.

Catching insects

The Insect Catcher allows you to gather food mid-flight - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

The Insect Catcher allows you to gather food mid-flight. The device must stick out from the vessel once built, so place it on the ship's edge. The lure must be lowered for it to work, which isn't possible if it's being blocked by the ship's floor.

The device will start moving and making noises when it catches something, letting you know right away - Forever Skies: Gathering and cooking food - Basics - Forever Skies Guide

The device will start moving and making noises when it catches something, letting you know right away. It's possible for the lure to be damaged without catching anything, so check the device every few minutes (and make more lures to spare).
