Many place in Archylte Steppe will be unavailable for you without Chocobo. To get this huge chicken you have to do mission number 14. As a reward you will get the Gysahl Reins. You will be able to summon your mount now, but only in places marked with yellow feather.

Chocobo will help you in traveling all over the Gran Pulse. In addition he will help you in avoiding some enemy soldiers. Remember that you have three morale points at the beginning and every hit will lower it by 1. When it will come to zero your chicken will run away [1]. The next thing is that when you will enter Archylte Steppe five places with treasures will appear. When you will be close to it and exclamation mark will appear above the head of your chicken [2]. It will be vibrating (the faster is vibrating the closer you are to the treasure). When you will be there, press the correct button and get the item:
