The easiest companion to recruit is Duras. You meet him at the beginning of the game, and later, you can find him in Goliet, in front of the stairs leading to Ragnar’s dwelling. In order for Duras to become your companion permanently, you will have to complete the “Berserker Warrior” quest – it begins after you agree to help Duras solve the riddle of Askor’s death. Your task will be to interrogate the witnesses. After the investigation is over, you will be able to conclude that it’s indeed Duras who’s responsible for the killing. You can either reveal this truth or lie to Ragnar. If you decide to do the former, you will have to fight Duras, which won’t be an easy fight. Choosing the latter will make Duras grateful, enabling you to have him as a companion permanently.
Traveling with a companion by your side is very beneficial. Your companion can help you in combat – allowing you to defeat multiple enemies, against which you would not stand a chance alone, while you earn all the experience points. What is worth remembering, your companions are not immortal and they can die when fighting more powerful beasts. The location of your companions is indicated on the map with a special marker – after a companion joins your team and then splits, he goes to Small Camp (location visible in the picture above). At least until you find a better hideout.
