Last update: 17 February 2022

Elex 2 is a direct continuation of the previous installment in the series. On this page of the game guide, we answer a question that might be important to those who haven't played the first Elex game - is playing the previous game necessary to understand the plot and enjoy the sequel?

Do I need to play the previous game?

Both parts of the series take place in the same world, and although the world has been significantly changed, many elements still overlap - Elex 2: Previous game - do I need to play? - Campaign and quests - Elex 2 Guide

Both parts of the series take place in the same world, and although the world has been significantly changed, many elements still overlap. First of all - in Elex 2, Jax meets many characters from the game's previous installment. However, the developers have come up with a solution that should avoid making new players feel confused. When meeting an important character, we often have a choice between two dialogue options - in one, Jax acts as if he's talking to an old friend, and in the other, he'll say he doesn't remember the character in question. When you aren't given this option, the characters will usually tell you about themselves.

Elex 2 also includes factions that appeared in the first game. These organizations, however, have changed so radically that their position in the world is quite different and their history is in some way rewritten. Representatives of the factions don't feel any major obligations or resentments towards Jax, so the events from the first Elex game won't affect their current attitude towards Jax (except for short dialogue lines that have no impact on the gameplay).

In short, you don't have to play the previous part of the series. Of course, knowing the characters or the former motivations of the factions helps in understanding the presented world, but not having this knowledge won't make the game any less fun.
