Last update: 24 January 2022

On this page of the guide to Dying Light 2 you'll learn all about healing your character - we explain whether Aiden can heal on his own as well as how to get medicine and how to use it. We also describe how to permanently extend your health bar, giving you more HP.

Basic info about the health bar and health regen

Your character in Dying Light 2 has a parameter which informs you of his current health - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

Your character in Dying Light 2 has a parameter which informs you of his current health. This value is visible in any menu - you can see his current and max HP. You can increase the latter throughout the campaign (more info on that can be found below), in order to give your character more health and make it easier for him to survive.

During gameplay you can see your health bar in the upper-left corner of the screen - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

During gameplay you can see your health bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. Once it gets low the game will warn you about it and recommend you to heal. If you don't have any medicine or any way to heal Aiden you can always try to escape somewhere safe.

The option to turn 180-degree instantly can be useful during a chase - use it by pressing the right button/key (Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox, CAPS LOCK on PC). You don't have to slowly turn the hero.

Full regeneration of the health bar, unfortunately, does not happen automatically, e - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

Full regeneration of the health bar, unfortunately, does not happen automatically, e.g. after waiting a long time. The exception is when the health bar is almost completely depleted. The game may then restore it to a minimum level, but playing as a heavily weakened character will be very risky.

You always must heal yourself manually. Remember to heal whenever you can, as you can easily die when weakened.

You can mainly be injured by:

  1. Successful enemy attacks - whether melee or ranged. To reduce the risk of getting hurt remember to dodge, block and parry as well as always watch out for your stamina during the battles.
  2. Enviromental hazards - these can include fire, traps or contaminated surfaces.
  3. Falling - you can partially circumvent this problem by buying the Active Landing and Safe Landing skills, which allow you to absorb some or all the fall damage you would usually take. Plan all your actions during parkour, look for Amortizers below you and watch out for your Stamina Bar when climbing.

Restoring lost health points

The game will teach you how to heal during the first mission, Pilgrim's Path - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

The game will teach you how to heal during the first mission, Pilgrim's Path. The protagonist will unlock a Medicine blueprint - you'll need Honey x1 and Chamomile x1, both of these materials being common in the game world.

You can also find medicine as loot or buy it from traders, although you should only do the latter as a last resort - your money is better spent elsewhere. Always keep some medicine on hand so you can heal when it's needed.

You should always have medicine prepared in one of the active inventory slots - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

You should always have medicine prepared in one of the active inventory slots. This will let you heal quickly by holding down the correct button (X on the PS4 and PS, A on the Xbox). Healing takes a few second and can be interrupted if you're attacked. If there are still any enemies in the area you should first run away from them, then start healing after reaching a safer place.

As you play through the campaign, you can gradually improve the medicine blueprint by visiting craftmasters and spending infected trophies and gold - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

As you play through the campaign, you can gradually improve the medicine blueprint by visiting craftmasters and spending infected trophies and gold. Thanks to this, you can increase their effectiveness and usefulness.

Later on in the campaign you'll obtain other consumables that can heal you:

  1. The Regeneration Booster can regenerate your health over the next minute. We recommend using it if you want to heal yourself, but don't need a sudden energy boost.
  2. The Military Medkit heals quickly - you don't need to wait a few seconds, as is the case with medicines. They will initially be a rare loot, but you will find more and more of them as you advance in the game. Try to research supply crates and containers/locations with inhibitors. There is a good chance that you will also find medkits in these places.
Your character can also regain full strength by using a bed - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

Your character can also regain full strength by using a bed. Sleep always replenishes all lost health points. As a reminder, you can find beds in safe zones and in allied locations (e.g. the Bazaar).

You should know that you can increase your healing's effectiveness with specific clothes - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

You should know that you can increase your healing's effectiveness with specific clothes. These are the items related to the Medic build, with an example pictured above. Wearing such an item can, for example, increase your health regeneration. The more items from the Medic "set" you put on, the more bonuses will be active at once.

Permanently increasing health

Aiden starts off with 100 health points, but his health bar can be permanently extended - Dying Light 2: Healing - How to restore health? - Character and statistics - Dying Light 2 Guide

Aiden starts off with 100 health points, but his health bar can be permanently extended. You can do so by using inhibitors - each time you collect three inhibitors (unique items found in the game world, for example in GRE facilities) you can spend them to increase your health or stamina. Choosing health rewards you with 20 extra health points.

We advise you to extend your health bar to at least 140 in the early game. This will not only increase Aiden's health but will also allow you to unlock some more advanced skills from the Combat tree (they may require you to have a certain number of max health points).
