The following page of the Dredge game guide discusses the mechanics of fishing. Thanks to fishing, you will earn money, which you will spend on better equipment to catch even more valuable specimens.
Where to fish?
In the game you will find many areas where you can cast your rods. Look out for places where the water is restless and you can see the silhouettes of animals circling under the surface. As you get closer, a hook icon will appear on the screen, suggesting you can start fishing here.
How to fish and beat the mini-game?
Once you're in the right spot, press F on your keyboard. After clicking the Start Fishing button or pressing the F key again, the mini-game will start. The mini-game may differ slightly depending on the species of fish, but its general assumptions are always the same.
Taking the fish out of the water is automated but takes a bit of time. To speed up the process, you need to click the Pull button or press the F key when the indicator overlaps the green area. If you do this correctly, you will take the fish out of the water much faster.
However, if you click at the wrong moment, i.e. the indicator will be outside the green area, then the fish will unwind the line, making the process even longer.
From time to time, you will see a yellow area instead of a green one. Although it is harder to press it, you should try, because in the case of success, you will catch a more valuable fish of a given species.
After a successful catch, place the fish in the hold. Remember that you can rotate the fish with the right mouse button. Thanks to this, you will adjust its shape to the slots and better organize the space on the ship.
You can also use the special place for caught specimens to place them temporarily, and then decide which ones you want to take with you.
If you don't feel like doing mini-games and want to completely automate the fishing process, you can turn off this mechanic in the options menu, specifically in the Accessibility tab.
Why can't I fish?
It may happen that when you stop over the fishery, a crossed out sign will appear saying that you cannot fish in this place at the moment. This means that you don't have the right equipment to catch a certain type of animal. To change this, you need to research new types of rods, then buy them and install on your ship. This will unlock those fisheries.
