Spending real money will definitely speed up and facilitate the gameplay, but that doesn't mean that playing without microtransactions is not possible - you can chase premium players by spending more time and focus on the game.
How to quickly gain experience and develop the character without spending money? There isn't a clear-cut way of doing so - you simply need to engage in the available quests and kill numerous monsters. This means that you'll have to farm or grind the available locations. Farming a location means that you return to the area for more runs, as the monsters will respawn which makes it possible to kill and loot them once again. Nevertheless, you cannot stay in a single area indefinitely, as the gap between you and the monsters will become so high that you will stop receiving experience after a certain period of time.
If the monster's level is even or higher than the level of your character, you don't have to worry - you'll receive 100% of experience. The situation changes once the level of the monsters is lower than the level of your hero:

As can be easily deducted - don't waste time-fighting monsters that are lower than your current experience level. The world map (you can view it by opening Travel Stones found across the world of the game) shows the experience level of each world. Follow the guidelines and choose a world that corresponds to your current level. You can also visit a world of higher difficulty level than your current character level, but you'll have to face tougher monsters.
How to increase the amount of accrued experience?
Your task can be eased by equipping companions (or pets) that speed and aid the process. Every pet can be bought from the Tamer in Kingshill. A summoned pet will start following you, activating the bonus - the effect is active until you decide to call off the companion.

We should also mention Amulet of Insight. The item is dropped randomly by the opponents in levels 5-14, so you can find it at the beginning of the game. The item offers 5% more experience when defeating enemies.
