On this page of the Disco Elysium guide, you will learn how to retrieve the body of the hanged man and thus how to make progress in the investigation.
The hanged body is behind the Whirling-In-Rags Hotel building. It is related to the main story quest Getting the body down. The body must be pulled from the tree so you can perform a field autopsy to advance the investigation. This can be done in two ways.
Shoot the belt
Approach the hanged man and examine the body. At this stage of the investigation, Harrier will probably vomit, and Kim will react very indulgently - he will say that it happens to everyone and that Ammonia can help offset the bad smell of decomposing flesh - you can get this chemical from the gardener.
Approach the woman sitting near the Whirling-In-Rag Hotel and ask her for ammonia - select the dialogue option marked in the image above. If you want, you can also ask for her gloves – she will gladly give them to you.
After getting the ammonia, go back to the hanged man and try to pass the Endurance skill check. The chance of Harrier passing it is very small, but you shouldn't worry about it. You will now gain access to the new skill – Volumetric Shit Compressor.
Go to the Thought Cabinet, select Volumetric Shit Compressor from the list on the left and then click Internalize. It will take 30 minutes to learn a new skill - talk to an NPC or read a book to move the time forward.
Go back to the hanged man and try to pass the Endurance test again - as you can see in the image above, the chance to pass the skill check will be really high.
If you worry that the attempt may fail, save the game so you can load it to try again.
Now you have to examine the body - select all dialogue options and check all possible clues to get as much information as possible. They will be useful in the investigation.
Once you have thoroughly examined the hanged body and consulted with Kim, select the dialogue option highlighted in the image above. Harrier will ask his partner how to pull the body down.
Select "Maybe we could shoot him down?" and then:
- Just shoot the belt, the bullet will break it: to suggest that you should try your luck by shooting the belt on which the man has hung;
- Take the shot lieutenant - what's the worst thing that could happen?: you encourage Kim to take the shot;
- Easy does it, partner: after this dialogue option, Kim will aim and shoot.
Kim's will fail, so you must take matters into your own hands - select Can I have the gun? I should try. dialog option.
Shooting down the body requires passing the Hand/Eye Coordination skill check, which can be really difficult if Harrier's hand-eye coordination doesn't have enough points. To increase your chances slightly, select Close your left eye first dialog option. If the attempt is successful, the body will fall to the ground – perform a field autopsy.
Ask Evrart Claire for help
Head to Evrart's office and go inside - if you don't know how to get there, you'll find exact instructions on Evrart Claire – where is he? page.
Your first conversation with the Union boss will be unpleasant, and Harrier will lose 1 Health point if he sits in a chair (unless you pass a passive Pain Threshold skill check) when forced to do so. At some point, you will be able to ask Evrart to help you get the dead body down from the tree - Could you please help me get a dead body down from a tree?
Evrart Claire won't want to get involved at first, but Kim will join the conversation and say that the man was hung on a cargo belt, so the Union definitely has something to do with it. Select Yeah, the belt thing, and Evrart will agree to help. The man will send you to Measurehead.
Go to Measurehead and speak with him. Select the following dialog options in this order:
- Youre right about this. Now I need you to help me get that corpse down from the tree: the man will not want to cooperate at first;
- Evrart told you to help us get the body down from the tree: you convince him that the order came straight from Evrart;
- Okay then: agree that you will watch the bridge while Measurehead goes to pull the body off the tree.
When the man returns, you can thank him for his help and cooperation. The body has been removed, so you can return to the crime scene and perform a field autopsy.
