Destiny 2: Glimmer - how to farm it, what to spend it on? Destiny 2 Guide

Last update: 24 March 2021

In this chapter of the game guide to Destiny 2 we explain what Glimmer is, how to get it and what to spend it on after collecting the maximum amount of this currency.

Glimmer is the main monetary currency in Destiny 2 and is necessary to trade with NPCs and required for upgrading equipment and performing other common activities. During gameplay, Glimmer can be received literally for anything: for killing mobs, for performing Bounties, for completing weekly tasks or public events. Unfortunately, you can't carry an unlimited amount of Glimmer with you so it's worth knowing what the limit is and what to spend it on after reaching the maximum amount.

Glimmer - what's the maximum amount of this currency?

At the time of writing of this guide, that is, after the introduction of the Shadowkeep DLC, the maximum amount of Glimmer you can hold in Destiny 2 is 250,000. Once you reach that amount, you won't be able to accept more of that currency, which means that the Glimmer you get in drops or earn for completing quests will simply disappear.

Glimmer in Destiny 2 can be found literally everywhere and can be received for performing all possible activities such as eliminating any opponents, completing Bounties, Patrols, Adventures, Gambit mode matches, etc - Destiny 2: Glimmer - how to farm it, what to spend it on? - Basics - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Glimmer - how to farm it?

Glimmer in Destiny 2 can be found literally everywhere and can be received for performing all possible activities such as eliminating any opponents, completing Bounties, Patrols, Adventures, Gambit mode matches, etc. At the time of writing this guide, the best ways to farm Glimmer in Destiny 2 are the following options:

  1. Looting chests of a particular region;
  2. Participating in Heroic Public Events;
  3. Dismantling unnecessary loot;
  4. Participating in The Crucible matches;
  5. Exchange and trade with Spider, the main NPC in Tangled Shore.

Too much Glimmer - what to spend it on?

When you reach the max Glimmer limit, it's important to know how to spend it most efficiently, which may get you potential profit in the future. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to invest Glimmer surpluses in Destiny 2, and below we present a few of them.

Imperial Chest

Looting Imperial Chests on a barge at The Watcher's Grave location on the Nessus planet is crucial for improving the Chalice of Opulence and customizing rewards received from The Menagerie. Looting each Imperial Chest costs 5,000 Glimmer, and inside you'll find Runes and Imperials. If you do not yet have access to the chests on the barge in The Watcher's Grave you will find information on how to unlock access to Imperial Chests in a separate section of this guide.

The Imperial Chests on a barge on the planet Nessus reset every Tuesday at 19:00 CET. Make sure you have at least 75,000 Glimmer in your wallet each week to open them all.

Bounties in Destiny 2 are the main way to collect a large amount of experience points, as well as additional crafting materials and of course Glimmer - Destiny 2: Glimmer - how to farm it, what to spend it on? - Basics - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Bounties

Bounties in Destiny 2 are the main way to collect a large amount of experience points, as well as additional crafting materials and of course Glimmer. Thus, it's worth spending the surplus of this currency on extra daily missions.

Each day, each player can purchase several daily missions from certain NPCs, usually for approximately 250 Glimmer - Destiny 2: Glimmer - how to farm it, what to spend it on? - Basics - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Each day, each player can purchase several daily missions from certain NPCs, usually for approximately 250 Glimmer. However, you can buy additional missions called Additional Bounties, which cost 3,000 Glimmer.

Additional Bounties cost up to 3,000 Glimmer due to the fact that you can do unlimited amounts of them and thus gain a lot of experience points at a rapid pace.

Crafting materials

In Destiny 2, there are a lot of crafting materials that are needed to modify your gear. In order to create powerful combinations of items you will need a lot of crafting materials, so the surplus of Glimmer can also be used for this particular purpose.

Some common materials available at NPCs such as Spider in Tangled Shore or Banshee-44 in The Tower will cost a certain amount of Glimmer, but more valuable ones can be bought for other materials like Enhancement Cores, Legendary Shards, Baryon Bough.

If you have a surplus of Glimmer you can also invest in a Raid Banner - Destiny 2: Glimmer - how to farm it, what to spend it on? - Basics - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Raid Banners

If you have a surplus of Glimmer you can also invest in a Raid Banner. Raid Banner works the same way as a flag during a public event, that is, it immediately recharges the super ability and fully replenishes ammo for all players who use it. Raid Banners can be bought from Petra Venj in The Dreaming City or from Suraya Hawthorne in The Tower.
