Destiny 2: Gear Score - character development Destiny 2 Guide

Last update: 24 March 2021

In this chapter of our game guide to Destiny 2 you can find out what is the Gear Score, how to count it, and what is its limit.

The Gear Score of a character in Destiny 2 depends on the equipment of the hero: weapon and armor, as well as a seasonal artifact, which is also being carried by every Guardian. The maximum level of Gear Score changes with each season - while we were writing this guide the Gear Score limit was 1060.

Gear Score in Destiny 2 - Levels and ranks

In Destiny 2 you can get a better quality equipment, with a higher level of Gear Score, for performing all possible tasks and activities such as story missions, side missions, Public Events - at least up to a certain level. After gaining the so-called soft cap, which is the level of 1000 Gear Score, the only way to get a new high quality gear that will boost up the power of your Gear Score is to complete objectives available in Challenges, especially get interested in The Weekly Flashpoint challenges. The latter are the most profitable activities and it would be unwise to miss such an opportunity. They get reset on a regular basis.

Another good method that can be used to quickly acquire equipment is to participate in the Crucibles battles. However, you won't get better items but only some alternative equipment of your current gear that has a similar level. The competition with other players takes place on the same level of gear score. Thus, you can participate in these battles even with a low-level character. Your skills, knowledge of the game's structures and good tactics are the most important things that matter.

For performing simple tasks, youll get tokens and a small amount of Glimmer - Destiny 2: Gear Score - character development - Levels and character development - Destiny 2 Game Guide

To get some alternative items with a similar or slightly higher Gear Score, but more suitable for your playing style you should try to collect tokens which are different on each planet. They are received as a reward for completing missions, side tasks, patrols, and public events. Also, you can get them for wiping out all enemy forces in the Lost Sectors. You can exchange tokens at your superior on a particular planet (the character icon on the map) for Legendary Engrams - so the items are random, but at least of a legendary rank. In addition, you can collect secrets and collectibles (in the form of crystals, glowing meshes, etc. - they are different on each planet and can be traded only on the corresponding planet) and exchange them like tokens. However, collectibles are less valuable than tokens.
