Each map contains additional icons that aren't mentioned in the legend. Here is a short list of typical icons encountered on almost every map:

Lost Sectors - Each contains a large group of opponents and a chest that can be opened once you've defeated the mini-boss. The chest contains a token from the given planet and additional rewards (most of the time the rewards are meager).

In every Lost Sector you'll find such a chest - don't forget to loot it.

A cleared sector will change its color to gray (visited) but you can return after some time and pick-up the crate (which will always contain a token), which will yield a lesser reward (weaker items and only 100 experience points instead of 600).

Region Chests - yellow chests (unique with single opening) - Maps, Icons and Activities - Activities - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Region Chests - yellow chests (unique with single opening). These often contain more than one token and rare items (e.g. weapon shaders). An opening will yield 100 experience points. Region Chests are often hidden in areas with more than one floor which makes them difficult to find. You may also encounter them in caves, so a map location may turn to be tough to access.

Public Events

Public Events are often boss fights. - Maps, Icons and Activities - Activities - Destiny 2 Game Guide
Public Events are often boss fights.

Public Events can be joined by any player that is currently on the map, even those who currently engage in a different mission. You can wait for those or even join an concluding event - you'll still be rewarded. The events appear after a constant period of time (e.g. around 5 minutes) in different areas around the map. The difficulty level varies - in short, you probably won't be able to complete them on your own. Once the event is concluded (even if you've failed) a chest containing your reward will appear. Each chest yields up to a few thousand points, making public events a good method of leveling. The tasks vary, but follow an overall pattern - either assault or defend a certain point on the map or defeat a powerful boss.

Adventures

One of the adventures - they arent easy and often youll find yourselves in the middle of interracial fights - Maps, Icons and Activities - Activities - Destiny 2 Game Guide

Orange icon of a sword. Appear daily on every planet and vary in course. Each mission displays the rewards and difficulty level (suggested Power) from the beginning.

These tasks are typical side missions - offer some semblance of plot, boss encounters and moments with resurrection restriction. Turn to these if you're looking for a challenge and variety after completing the main plot. You'll also have an opportunity to pick up exotic engrams, but most of the time the reward is meager.

Quests

A blue crown icon. Similar to Adventures - i.e. quests that see us complete certain objectives. The rewards aren't very satisfying, both in terms of equipment and experience, so treat them more as a diversion. Some of the quests are rewarded with character development points which can be spent to develop your subclasses.
