Dead Cells is a game with rogue-like elements - Can you save your progress in Dead Cells? - FAQ - Dead Cells Game Guide

Dead Cells is a game with rogue-like elements. This means two things - death is inevitable but you don't lose everything. When you die, you have to start all over again BUT you can keep permanent upgrades, blueprints or a bit of your gold. Don't fear death - the game has been created in a such way where each new run becomes easier with acquired items and skills.

Dead Cells doesn't have any checkpoints. You can unlock portals that make exploration faster and easier. However, every death makes you start back in Prisoners' Quarters, the starting location. You can unlock new areas - there are multiple ways that lead to the arena with the final boss.

A single playthrough of Dead Cells should take you about 2 hours provided that you have a good build. 2 hours is a lot of time, however, you don't have complete all levels in one go. The game saves your progress upon exiting it. To be sure that your progress is saved you can pause the game and select Quit option. Press Continue (presented in the picture above) in the main menu to start in the same location where you left the game. Note - Resuming a game deletes your save. If you die, you will have to start all over again. The Continue option won't be available in the main menu.

Additional Note - If you want to unlock achievements faster, e.g. by killing certain bosses, you can stop the game right after you reach a location with a powerful enemy. Create a backup save in case your character dies. This isn't a recommended way of playing this game - the gameplay is built around multiple runs during which you can get more cells and blueprints.
