Dead Space Remake: Beginner's guide Dead Space Remake guide

This page of the guide to Dead Space Remake contains a set of tips for beginners. Hints include how to fight necromorphs, explore locations at 100%, use the map, upgrade equipment, spend credits in stores and fly in zero gravity.

Last update: 01 February 2023

Dead Space Remake has similar mechanics to the original version from 2008, but also offers important new features. On this page, we have prepared a beginner's guide that will make it easier for you to survive the fights with the Necromorphs and finish the game. Our tips and advice are primarily related to combat, exploration of the ship, obtaining security clearances, using the map, visiting shops, moving in zero gravity, and upgrading equipment.

Cut off the limbs of monsters

The unique method of killing Necromorphs didn't change in the remake - you have to shoot at monsteres' limbs, not, for example, at the head or the central part of the body - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

The unique method of killing Necromorphs didn't change in the remake - you have to shoot at monsteres' limbs, not, for example, at the head or the central part of the body.

Be aware that Necromorphs in Dead Space Remake can also be more durable on the default Normal difficulty level. You will notice this especially when using weapons without upgrades. For example, a single shot from the Plasma Cutter to the limb can only weaken it, meaning you will need to shoot it again to cut it off.

In the later part of the campaign, you will also have to aim at orange glands - they can be part of the opponent's body or be found in the environment as a fragment of a larger living thing.

Stomp on Necromorphs and blue boxes

In Dead Space Remake, as in the original, it is important to use the stomping mechanic (R2/right trigger on the controller) - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

In Dead Space Remake, as in the original, it is important to use the stomping mechanic (R2/right trigger on the controller). You can:

  1. stomp on monsters - use this method only on heavily weakened monsters or smaller creatures that can die immediately;
  2. stomp on crates - containers that can be pulled towards you using kinesis.

In both cases, you can get additional loot from the box or the defeated Necromorph. Obtaining supplies becomes especially important at higher difficulty levels.

Checking the map helps you explore the locations in 100 percent

Dead Space Remake offers a much more transparent map than the original version and you should use it more often - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

Dead Space Remake offers a much more transparent map than the original version and you should use it more often. The map mainly shows the path to the current mission objective (you can change them in the journal if you have a few), but you can also find optional rooms to explore and doors and chests that require the Master Override (you can return to them later in the game after obtaining the clearance).

On the map screen, you can also switch between floors - very often the destination is on a different level of a given deck.

Opening the map, shop window or inventory does not pause the game

As a reminder, the map and equipment screens are holograms, i.e. they are displayed by Isaac's suit. The game doesn't pause when you want to check your location on the map, read something in the journal or select an item from the inventory.

You can be surprised while browsing the menu screens by a Necromorph spawned in the area. The same applies to using the shop or bench - you can be attacked by a monster. Always listen to the sounds of the environment and, after hearing a Necromorph, quickly close the current menu so that you don't get hit while being defenseless.

Memorize locked rooms and containers

One of the bigger changes in Dead Space Remake is that some doors and containers require a certain level of security clearance - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

One of the bigger changes in Dead Space Remake is that some doors and containers require a certain level of security clearance. Level 1-3 clearances can be obtained at certain points in the main storyline, while the Master Override is a reward for completing one of the side missions.

Try to remember the locations of locked rooms and chests so that you can return to them after obtaining the appropriate clearance. Unfortunately, the game does not mark everything on the map - only locked doors and chests that require a Master Override are marked.

More information about opening locks can be found on the How to get security clearances? page in the FAQ section.

Spend credits on RIG upgrades

Shops in the game sell various items and their offer can be expanded by finding schematics (one of the categories of collectibles) - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

Shops in the game sell various items and their offer can be expanded by finding schematics (one of the categories of collectibles). You should plan your early purchases carefully, because you won't be able to afford everything.

We recommend buying upgrades for Isaac's suit (RIG). You can get it up to level 5 in your first playthrough, and up to level 6 in NG+ mode. The improved suit mainly increases the inventory, allowing you to carry more items. It also increases Isaac's resistance to attacks. Suits are expensive, so don't spend credits unnecessarily, even if you have several thousand of them.

Stasis and kinesis help in fights

Besides firearms, in Dead Space Remake you can use other things that will be helpful in defeating Necromorphs - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

Besides firearms, in Dead Space Remake you can use other things that will be helpful in defeating Necromorphs. These are:

  1. Stasis - it slows monsters down. This is especially useful for elite Necromorphs. Stasis will help you target their weak spots and not worry about their attacks for a while. Refill stasis at stations and look for stasis containers to throw them.
  2. Kinesis - allows you to throw objects. You can achieve the best results by throwing sharp objects (e.g. rods, severed limbs of Necromorphs) and explosive containers. The advantage of kinesis is also that it is unlimited.

Upgrade your suit and favorite weapons

In Dead Space Remake, you can also collect nodes known from the original version - these are items used to upgrade equipment at benches - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

In Dead Space Remake, you can also collect nodes known from the original version - these are items used to upgrade equipment at benches. You can upgrade your RIG suit and your weapons. Not all items from the development tree are immediately visible - the next ones will be revealed, e.g. after finding a weapon upgrade (collectible) or buying a higher level suit. Prioritize:

  1. Extending the hero's health bar - This is a category of suit upgrades. Improved vitality will increase your chances of surviving.
  2. Increasing damage dealt - On the tree of each weapon you will find red items related to its damage, but you can also find other upgrades that can, for example, improve the alternate fire mode.

You can't buy all upgrades in one playthrough (they carry over to New Game Plus), so you have to choose the most important ones.

Remember to level out in locations with zero gravity

Moving in zero gravity and in a vacuum is easier in Dead Space Remake than in the original, but you can still easily get lost and have problems - what is the wall, what is the ceiling, and what is the floor - Dead Space Remake: Beginners guide - Basics - Dead Space Remake Guide

Moving in zero gravity and in a vacuum is easier in Dead Space Remake than in the original, but you can still easily get lost and have problems - what is the wall, what is the ceiling, and what is the floor.

The Align option is very helpful in moving around zero gravity locations. You can activate it by holding down R2/right trigger. Keep holding the button until Isaac is leveled out. Then look around and determine the position of the hero and the place you want to reach.
