Conan Exiles will slap you in the face really good, if you're not careful enough. We summarize the best tips and tricks for beginners.
Conan Exiles is merciless game. You start as a primitive barbarian in the desert, with little more than a few stones, sticks and a perforated water bag in your inventory. You laboriously leave the desert to enter a fruity oasis, and then you find out, filled with fear, that in this alleged idyll everything and everyone wants your hero dead. Because in Funcom's survival sandbox, everyone is hungry, including the monsters.
To arm oneself against enemies and wild creatures is not that easy. In principle, Conan Exiles doesn't explain what to do in the long run, what actions to focus on at the beginning of the game and how to escape this damn crocodile. It neither explains any details about the in-game story.
You have to uncover all the secrets of this wild and barbaric world. Our five tips for the perfect start should help you to gain a better knowledge on how to survive in dangerous sands. Tip 1: Finding the right server
Actually, this seems really obvious, but you should definitely look for a server that corresponds to your own preferences. This affects the communities - on a role-playing server you can expect a completely different player base than on a PvP slaughter.
Also, consider playing in PvP, PvE or solo adventures. Especially at the beginning we recommend that you should slowly find out how Conan Exiles works, either alone or with a buddy. Learning curve of this game is quite steep. After you gain basic experience, then you can punch people in the mouth in PvP.
Tip 2: Collect, collect, collect
Just like in real life, it is worth taking everything that you can barely find and seems somewhat useful for crafting. It means that at the beginning of Conan Exiles you should: pick bushes, plant branches, and gather stones. The cost of the first survival items is hefty - a campfire alone needs 50 branches, and then of course you want to continue to keep the flame on. In addition, a lot of resources are needed for first clothes and weapons.
Of course you will find better loot from human opponents (AI opponents and real players), but we advise you to be careful, because they usually show up as a group and beat you completely in no time at all. A little patience for a lengthy gathering of peaceful bushes and stones helps here enormously.
Tip 3: Houses are beautiful, but don't build one right away
Without a question - those who manage to build a roof over their heads in Conan Exiles have the worst part behind them. Only very few enemies can do any damage to stone walls - in PvP as well as in PvE. The medium-term goal should therefore be to build such a hut (preferably on a hill). Not too soon, though!
At the beginning of Conan Exiles the struggle for life is still very important. Players usually rescue their heroes by traveling from waterhole to waterhole, from prey to prey - and the construction of a house requires enormous numbers of resources and building materials. So you should gather a good supply of materials before thinking of four walls and a roof.
Tip 4: Off to bed
Beds are not to cuddle in Conan Exiles, but serve a much better purpose - they are spawn points! So before setting a fire somewhere in the world, creating tools and thinking about the big house construction, you should definitely build a bed. If you die in the middle of the desert while gathering items and you haven't set a bed as a spawn point beforehand - you will spawn far away and have to get a long and troublesome journey to reclaim the loot from your corpse.
The camping sequence looks like this: find a pleasant and sheltered place, prepare a first bed there, and then light a campfire. After that, you can conjure higher quality treats (if you research the cooking fire recipe from level 3).
Tip 5: Steel, you need steel
With the first journey to the landscape your primary goal should be to get steel as soon as possible. Steel is used for crafting best armors in the game. From level 10 you can use a crafting recipe to unlock the furnace that allows to melt down the steel. This will unlock several new crafting options.
Steel requires a whole bunch of steps to produce and it requires a lot of time. First steps consist in heating up the ironstones in the furnace. The furnace requires coal as the fuel source. Cooking ironstones will get you iron bars. Later you need a "Tar" by turning thick hides into leather in Tannery. After that, put Tar in Firebowl Cauldron with Coal and Brimstone to get Steelfire. Finally, you put iron bars and steelfire to get Steel. Now, you're one of the most powerful entities in the world of Conan Exiles. Congratulations.
