The scales indicate your progression into the game - if your opponent beats you to it and obtain 51% completion of the game, you lose

The primary goal in the game is to obtain 51% of shares in companies, to seize control over them. You have to do that, before your AI opponent does. Time is of essence here, but it passes slowly and does not play major role at the beginning of the game. At the beginning, you will be finding your family members and receive shares from them. This is the period, over which you try to earn as much cash as possible, thanks to which you transport goods faster and more efficiently. Here, you are allowed a lot of freedom. You can try investments, passenger/goods transport, side contracts or train robberies. During the game, major and lesser events occur, such as war, which can affect the increased difficulty level later in the game.
