On this page of the guide, you will find a list of all playable characters in Baldur's Gate 3. You will find out where the potential companions are, what requirements you need to meet to join the new party members, and what classes they represent.
The list is based on the Early Access version of Baldur's Gate 3. It is possible that the final version of the game will have more playable characters. If that happens, our list will be updated.
Playable characters in Baldur's Gate 3:
Note – This is a temporary companion. It cannot travel with the rest of the team in the main part of the campaign.
Character type: Intellect Devourer.
How to add to the party: We have described this unusual party member on the Myrnath and the talking brain – Nautiloid page. During the course of the prologue, you can find Myrnath aboard Nautiloid, the flying ship on which the operation took place.
When you examine Myrnath, you will hear the brain's voice asking you to free it. Don't choose the option for destroying the brain, Instead, try to pass one of the skillchecks.
If you've successfully removed the talking brain from the skull, you can also take the Dexterity skillcheck to secretly mutilate it. The Intellect Devourer will accompany you until the end of the prologue.
Character type: Warrior, female, Githyanki race.
How to add to the party: Lae'zel is first encountered while traversing one of the damaged side sections of the Nautiloid ship, aboard which the prologue takes place. Lae'zel joins the main character automatically after a brief conversation. She will remain with the party until the prologue is completed – after the emergency landing.
You must find Lae'zel in the first act again. She is imprisoned in a cage in the location shown in the images above – the area north of the Roadside Cliffs portal. You can act in two main ways:
- You can attack the Tieflings guarding Lae'zel's cage. You can initiate the fight with a surprise attack or by selecting the appropriate dialog option. After winning the battle, destroy the lower part of the cage to free Lae'zel.
- You can pass a Deception (scaring the Tieflings) or Persuasion skillcheck (shooting the cage down). In the latter case, you will be given the choice of who to ally with – choose Lae'zel. If you attack her, she will die and won't be able to join you.
If Lae'zel survived the encounter, you can invite her to the party, send her back to camp or refuse her.
Character type: Cleric, female, Half-Elf.
How to add to the party:You could see Shadowheart in the capsule aboard the Nautiloid. The first proper encounter with her comes just after the beginning of the first act – after you wake up on the beach after surviving the ship's crash.
Head north-east, and after a few moments, you will reach one of the entrances to the Overgrown Ruins. The cleric tries to open the door leading to the ruins. When you talk to her, you can invite her to your party, send her back to the camp or refuse her.
Character type: Rogue, male, Half-Elf.
How to add to the party: The first encounter with Astarion happens in Ravaged Beach, west of the Overgrown Ruins. During it, the Elf will try to outwit the main character. You can go in pursuit of the alleged monster or stay put.
It is possible that the main character will be knocked down by Astarion. You can then follow the Elf's commands or try to pass one of the skillchecks to free yourself. The tests from the list may include those related to Dexterity, Strength, or melee combat.
During this scene, a "mind connection" will occur – Astarion learns that you are both in the same situation. As a result, the Elf's attitude will change to friendly. You can invite Astarion to the team, send him back to the camp or refuse him.
Character type: Wizard, male, Human.
How to add to the party: Gale will appear automatically upon approaching the Ancient Rune Circle in Roadside Cliff highlighted in the image. It is located northwest of Overgrown Ruins.
The wizard passes through a portal – talk to him. Regardless of the dialog options you choose, you can invite Gale to your party in the final part of the conversation. Alternatively, you can send him back to the camp or refuse him.
Character type: Warlock, male, Human.
How to add to the party: Wyll is in the Druid Grove, which you must defend against goblins. After winning the battle, you can enter the Grove. The warlock is in the training area shown in the pictures above.
During your first encounter with Wyll, you can use the hero's "special power" to pass the Illithid persuasion skillcheck and see his mind. This test cannot be failed – it requires you to roll 1 or more.
After the conversation, you can invite Wyll to the party in order to go on a joint search for Halsin. Alternatively, you can send him back to the camp or refuse him.
