Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities Baldurs Gate 3 guide, walkthrough

In this chapter of the Baldurs Gate 3 guide, you will find a detailed description of the process of creating a new character.

The character creator in Baldurs Gate 3 is very extensive and allows players to create an original character that fits perfectly with their playstyle and reflects specific character traits. You will be able to choose, e.g. the character's race and/or subrace, their class and possible subclass, skills and attributes, and decide what your character will look like. If you want, you can also choose one of the pre-made characters.

Step 1 - custom character or default

When you go to the hero creation screen you will be able to choose one of the predefined characters [2] and start playing Baldur's Gate 3 right away or create your own hero from scratch [1].

When choosing one of the default characters [2], you have to be aware that it may not necessarily fit your playstyle or has the right skills - Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities - Basics - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough

When choosing one of the default characters [2], you have to be aware that it may not necessarily fit your playstyle or has the right skills. If you want to make the most of the character's individual features, skills, and attributes, it is best to opt for the Custom option [1]. Customizing the hero may take you a long time, but you shouldn't worry you'll spend a lot of time in Baldur's Gate 3.

You can freely switch between the creator's different options just select the right tab from the top bar of the character creation screen [3].

Step 2 - select a race, subrace, gender

The first step in creating your own hero in Baldur's Gate 3 is to choose their gender, race, subrace, and additional abilities/attributes. It should be noted here that depending on the chosen race, the character creator window may display different options.

In the upper-right part of the image above you can see the gender selection section, the race [1], and the possible sub-race [2] - Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities - Basics - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough

In the upper-right part of the image above you can see the gender selection section, the race [1], and the possible sub-race [2]. If the race you choose has additional attributes or abilities, they will appear here [3]. At the bottom of the character creation window [4], you will find information about racial traits and possible characteristics for a given subrace. In Baldur's Gate 3, you can choose between 8 races, and some of them can be further divided into sub-races.

  1. Elf - skillful and fast, live in harmony with nature, love art, magic and artistry, avoid open combat, and are skillful archers. Race Bonus: 2 Dexterity. Available subraces: High Elf, Wood Elf;
  2. Half-elf - some argue that half-elves combine the best qualities of Elves and Humans. Race Bonus: 2 Charisma and two additional attribute points that can be allocated by the player. Available subraces: Wood Half-Elf, Drow Half-Elf;
  3. Tiefling - their appearance and nature are the results of an ancient sin (a pact with Asmodeus, the ruler of the Nine Hells) for which they will always be held responsible. Racial bonus: 1 Intelligence, 2 Charisma. Available subraces: Zariel Tefling, Mephistopheles Tiefling;
  4. Drow - live underground in a violent society worshipping the goddess Lilith. They are excellent with one-handed crossbows and short swords. Race bonus: 1 Charisma. Available subraces: Seldarine Drow, Lolth-Sworn Drow;
  5. Human - humans are the youngest of the common races, and their life span is short compared to Dwarves or Elves. Humans are known for their versatility and innovation. Race bonus: 1 point to all attributes;
  6. Githyanki - excellent warriors, they have a bonus to wearing light and medium armor, and they masterfully use various kinds of swords. Racial bonus: 1 Intelligence, 2 Strength;
  7. Dwarf - extremely loyal and hardworking, masters of blacksmithing, they hate Goblins and Orcs. They are adept at wielding axes and hammers. Racial bonus: 2 Constitution (health points). Available subraces: Gold Dwarf, Shield Dwarf;
  8. Halfling - despite their small height, they are characterized by great dexterity, extraordinary luck, and the natural ability to hide from the enemy's sight. Race Bonus: 2 Dexterity. Available subraces: Lightfoot Halfling, Strongheart Halfling.

If you don't know which race to choose, you can find more information about all races and sub-races available in Baldur's Gate 3 in a separate section of this guide.

The next step of creating your hero in Baldur's Gate 3 is a little simpler you have to choose the appearance and a few other additional characteristics. Every aspect you want to modify offers several available options in the forms of a list or color palette.

Step 4 - class and subclass

In the next stage of creating a character in Baldur's Gate 3, you will have to choose one of the available classes [1] that will define your playstyle. It is worth noting here that some classes also have access to subclasses, spells, or special skills [2] this will help you match the hero's skills to your needs even better.

In Baldur's Gate 3, you can choose between the following classes:

  1. Cleric - they are representatives of the gods they worship and are able to use divine magic. Available subclasses: Life Domain (protective and healing spells), Light Domain (spells that harm the undead), Trickery Domain (disorienting spells, illusion);
  2. Fighter - a master of close combat, able to use different types of weapons, wear various types of armor, and use a shield;
  3. Ranger - excellent scouts and trackers who have master the art of using a bow. Ranger can determine the type of their favorite opponent (e.g. creatures from other places), and choose an additional character trait (e.g. strong bond with animals);
  4. Rogue - they have mastered the art of stealth meaning that they can surprise their enemy with a powerful back attack. They can also use a bow. However, this class likes to avoid direct confrontation;
  5. Warlock - bound by a pact with an all-powerful patron (an extraterrestrial being), they possess supernatural abilities that allow them to use unique magic. Available subclasses: The Fiend (incendiary spells), The Great Old One (vulnerability spells);
  6. Wizard - magicians who specialize in particular schools of magic. They possess protective, control, and destructive spells associated with certain elements.

If you don't know which character class to choose, you can find more information about all classes and sub-classes available in Baldur's Gate 3 in a separate section of this guide.

Step 5 - skills

The skill selection screen allows you to determine which of them your character will be fluent in [1] - depending on the character class, you will be able to choose between several options. You will also find here a list of skills without proficiency [2].

In Baldur's Gate 3, your hero will receive a bonus to every skill in which they are proficient - Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities - Basics - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough

In Baldur's Gate 3, your hero will receive a bonus to every skill in which they are proficient. This bonus increases with your hero's level and applies to all tests of this particular skill. Depending on the character class, you will be able to assign a certain number of points to skills that have not been pre-determined - they are marked in orange and cannot be changed.

It's worth noting here that there are moments in Baldur's Gate 3 where you will have to test your hero's skills when performing an action that may fail. This can happen during a conversation, fight, or attempt to perform a specific action such as disarming a trap or smashing an object. For example, when your character is adept at persuasion, you have a much better chance of convincing others to share your point of view and thus gaining additional profit.

For more information on the Ability Checks mechanic and character skills available in Baldur's Gate 3, see a separate section of this guide.

Step 6 - attributes

The next step in creating a character in Baldur's Gate 3 is to spend attribute points in a way that best reflects your character and playstyle. For example, a Ranger should have a higher Dexterity attribute because they use a weapon based on that attribute in combat. A Wizard can focus on developing Intelligence at the expense of Strength.

The character development in Baldur's Gate 3 is based on 6 basic attributes - Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities - Basics - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough

It should be noted here that attributes are also closely related to the protagonist's skills. The higher the value of an attribute, the greater the chance of successful Ability Check associated with that particular attribute.

For more information on all the attributes available in Baldur's Gate 3 and their impact on character development, see the separate section of this guide.

Step 7 - origin, name, summary

After going through all the previous creator tabs, you will see the Origin screen. This is where you'll be able to complete your character creation and check your choices. If you have made a mistake, you can quickly fix it by returning to the specific character creator tab.

On the right side of the screen, you will notice a window for entering your character's name [1] - Baldurs Gate 3: Character creation - class, race, abilities - Basics - Baldurs Gate 3 Guide, Walkthrough

Below you will find a list from which you can choose the background [2] of your character. It will also provide you with additional skills (proficiencies).

On the left side, you will notice a panel with a summary of the character you created [3]. It is worth taking a moment to check all information and, if necessary, make some corrections in the corresponding tabs. Once you are satisfied with the character you have created, you can click on the button that will take you to the next step [4].

Step 8 - who does your hero dream of?

After confirming your main character in Baldur's Gate 3, you will have the opportunity to determine who his/her potential love interest may be. However, this character's creator is limited to several options related to Origin, appearance, and other traits.
