Combat guide for Anthem Anthem Guide and Walkthrough

Last update: 28 February 2019

Combat in Anthem is the essence of the game. You always fight in the PvE mode (i.e. player versus environment - there are no PvP duels). The combat is initiated during the mission (expedition) and during the free game. Important: for the combat itself (style or number of kills) you will not gain experience - you will receive it only for performing Feats. In combat, a player can use:

  1. Two firearms and switch between them,
  2. Melee attacks,
  3. Use two skills that are renewed over time and have different actions and effects. You can change active skills at the Forge by modifying your javelin,
  4. Use a special skill - dedicated to each type of javelin,
  5. Use buffs (reinforcements) on yourself or your allies.

Basic Skills and Abilities

The player has many skills to choose from for each of the javelins.

Each javelin has three types of basic skills (activated with Q, E and Z keys) that you can modify. They have different effects, attack power and area of effect. It is a good idea to select these abilities so that you can perform a combo, i.e. cast a certain effect to an enemy and release damage from the combination by using the activator's ability (abilities that activate the combo have such a note in the description of the combo. The third type of ability is support: it allows you and your allies to give positive effects to increase resistances, distract enemies' attention with crowd control features, etc.

You can modify all skills at the Forge by changing the appropriate fields next to your suit. Skills are treated as items: during the completion of missions you will gain them as rewards for defeating strong opponents, or you will find them in chests, as well as craft some from blueprints (skill blueprints can be gained by equipping yourself with a given skill and reaching the appropriate number of kills - this is related to Challenges).

Special skills and abilities

Each javelin has a unique and unmodifiable special skill - Combat guide for Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Each javelin has a unique and unmodifiable special skill. When using it:

  1. You are immortal,
  2. You have unlimited lifetime (no overheating),
  3. You do not receive a penalty from negative modifiers,
  4. You deal massive damage to enemies,
  5. After it is finished, you will fully regenerate your health and shield.

The special skill renews itself over time; activate it with the X key.

Critical Strikes

Each opponent has a weak critical point on his or her body - Combat guide for Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Each opponent has a weak critical point on his or her body. Shooting at this point increases damage by about 50%, which is especially important for fast firearms. In most cases this is the head, but not always, as in the case of Titans, where the sensitive point are hands and back when the opponent prepares an attack. When you deal critical damage, it is visible as yellow digits.

Health and shield

Javelins have two stamina indicators, which determine how long they will withstand attacks before they need help from another player or a respawn - Combat guide for Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Javelins have two stamina indicators, which determine how long they will withstand attacks before they need help from another player or a respawn. The visible bars in the upper left corner determine: blue - shield, green - health.

The shield is an additional reserve of health. It regenerates very quickly and until it is destroyed, you do not take any health damage. This also applies to enemies with a shield. If you don't have a lot of health, keep an eye on the condition of your shield and withdraw when it starts to disappear.

When your health drops to zero, you wont be able to move - Combat guide for Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

When your health drops to zero, you won't be able to move. By default, automatic regeneration takes place only up to approx. 20%. To heal yourself, kill weak enemies - ammunition and red health crystals fall out of them. You can increase the healing power and loot rate drop chance using Components (one of the groups of items that modify javelins at the Forge).

Effects

Some enemy attacks and player skills are able to cast an effect on your opponent - Combat guide for Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Some enemy attacks and player skills are able to cast an effect on your opponent. They result in a penalty for the player / opponent in the form of limited mobility, declining health or vulnerability. Modifiers include:

  1. Fire - in a player's suit it causes overheating, so you can't fly (or automatically fall to the ground during the flight); in addition, fire hurts the victim very strongly.
  2. Acid - drastically reduces your opponent's defense, making it highly vulnerable.
  3. Electricity - Combines the effect of fire and ice: deals some damage and slightly reduces the mobility of the victim. Also causes the suit to overheat.
  4. Ice - Freezing causes the victim to be completely immobilized. If the victim is a player, press the jump button quickly to get out of the trap faster.
  5. Cobwebs - you will find cobwebs in caves. If you fall into the spider web during the flight, you will fall to the ground. Spider web is also an offensive skill of spiders. To get out of it faster, press the jump key quickly.

Combos

A combo is a combination of two attacks that rely on the skills of players. If you attack an opponent with an attack that gives an effect (e.g. fire) and the opponent gets the status of being on "fire", (indicated by an icon over his head), using another special attack (activator) on him, results in a combo. The combinations can be created by the player (if player has the appropriate skills) or by any other player when he or she uses the skills. Thanks to the combination:

  1. You will increase the attack range,
  2. You will increase the attack power,
  3. You will gain additional experience (Action to get the right number of combinations during a single expedition).

By using the appropriate modules and installing them in your suit at the Forge, you can increase the attack multiplier during the combination.

Tips

  1. The longer you use one build, the stronger it becomes - going on expeditions with the same skills and weapons will allow you to unlock challenges over time, thanks to which you will unlock better blueprints for item crafting.
  2. Select skills that will allow you to setup your own combo.
  3. Use melee combat, especially when you are fighting enemies without shield and those who are very weak.
  4. Using melee attack from a height or during a flight will significantly increase damage.
  5. Often use a unique ability - especially when your health is at stake,
  6. Perform evasions and dodges - with Left Ctrl you can make a quick jump in any direction; it will allow you to particularly avoid the strong skills of your opponents.
