You need to complete Story Missions to progress through the game. Thanks to them, you can participate in the main story and unlock new options (e.g. access to the Strongholds).

Story Missions can be completed alone and with other players. After completing every Story Mission, you get XP and, optionally, loyalty points and loot.

Agent Missions

In Anthem, side quests are called Agent Missions - Types of missions in Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

In Anthem, side quests are called Agent Missions. You don't start them automatically - you need to visit the Fort Tarsis and meet with a quest giver first. Usually, they are members of one of the three factions. Completing Agent Missions can give you additional loyalty points for a given faction.

Agent Missions can be completed alone or with other players. After completing every Agent Mission, you get XP and, optionally, loyalty points and loot. Also, some side quests can create a whole plotline - completing one Agent Mission can unlock another related quest.

Contracts

Contracts are minor side quests in Anthem - you can accept them from the notice board located in the main part of the fort or in the Launch Bay - Types of missions in Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Contracts are minor side quests in Anthem - you can accept them from the notice board located in the main part of the fort or in the Launch Bay. Contracts have random objectives - their fragments are generated randomly. There are two versions of Contracts - standard and legendary. The latter is much more difficult, but they offer better rewards.

Contracts can be completed alone or with other players. As a reward, you get a certain number of coins (the in-game currency). Sometimes, you can also get loyalty points and loot.

Strongholds

Strongholds are the most difficult missions in Anthem - Types of missions in Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Strongholds are the most difficult missions in Anthem. There, you will face the strongest regular enemies and bosses. They put much more emphasis on cooperation between players - they have to complete objectives together and revive each other when one of them gets knocked down during a battle.

Strongholds require you to play with others. Invite friends or use the matchmaking option to join random players. After completing a Stronghold, you are rewarded with XP. Sometimes, you can also receive loyalty points and loot. Another important information is that treasure chests appear more commonly here, e.g. after every larger battle.

Strongholds aren't available right from the start. Keep doing main missions until you unlock Finding Old Friends mission. More information on How to unlock Stronghold missions? chapter.

Freeplay

Freeplay in Anthem is a unique type of expedition - it combines exploration with random activities - Types of missions in Anthem - Basics - Anthem Guide

Freeplay in Anthem is a unique type of expedition - it combines exploration with random activities. These activities are called World Events and they activate randomly on specific parts of the map. Their objectives are also randomized. World Events are always optional but completing them will reward you with XP and, sometimes, with loyalty points and loot. Besides World Events, you can also attack enemies and wild animals, look for collectibles, crafting resources, dungeons, and treasure chests.

Freeplay requires you to join a public session which means that you will encounter other players. You can play with friends or random players picked by the matchmaking option. You don't have to stay with other players and cooperate with them. Your character can fight and explore the world alone, ignoring other Javelins.

Some story missions require you to go to the Freeplay mode. After loading the map, focus on the mission's objectives.
