Commentary: Germans are a rather versatile faction. They have a wide range of units with good offensive potential. Powerful cavalry is their strength because it can destroy multiple enemy units. Germans units can quickly get access to cheap armor upgrades which combined with high morale can turn them into powerful warriors.
Counter them by exploiting the fact that Germans lack units with shields. Because of that they are susceptible to surprise attacks. You can also defeat them fast by using archers. A good tactic against Germans is to rush them with a large infantry group (remember about Spearmen to counter cavalry) that is buffed with prayers. Each lost unit strongly affects Germans because of their cost and the fact that they usually wear upgraded armor.
