This page of the Amnesia Rebirth guide provides a walkthrough of The Fortress chapter. You will learn, among others, how to enter the main building of the fortress, how to solve the puzzle with the elevator, how to get to the radio, how to escape the monster, how to get saltpeter and how to access the arsenal.

There are 36 secrets in The Fortress:

The locations where you can obtain collectibles have been included in the walkthrough below.
You can also find other interactive items, but not all of them will be of any use. We recommend collecting the kerosene containers (available in 3 versions - an example of a medium-sized tank in the picture) on a regular basis and using them on the lamp you obtained earlier. It can make it easier to travel through dark locations. However, you can still use matches if you prefer them.
Exploring the fortress's courtyard
The fortress is a location that offers greater freedom of exploration, although certain steps will be required to unlock the passage to the next area (the arsenal). You also will have an easier time finding secrets and collectibles - you can return to previously visited locations until you leave the fortress. You don't have to find secrets in the same order as described in our walkthrough.
Exploring the courtyard is optional, but it will allow you to get a few secrets and 1 achievement. Check out the stairs to the right of the starting point - they lead to the upper area with a cannon. Next to the chest, you will find a secret - Hank's Notes: Malick Tamboura.
Now, go to the left of the place where you have started exploring the fortress. In the place shown in the picture, you will find a small water tank. Interacting with the water will unlock the Narcissist trophy received for seeing your reflection in the water.
Stay in this area and look for a box with a sandbag inside. Move the bag to reveal the matches.
Also, in the left part of the courtyard, there is the entrance to the main building of the fort (see the picture). This location is separated from the courtyard by a loading screen. Go inside.
Exploring the fort's bottom floor
Your main task inside the fort is to reach the radio, which is in a temporarily inaccessible place. The following part of the walkthrough focuses on finding all the secrets on the ground floor of the fort. If you want to focus only on the story, go to the next subsection, The elevator puzzle.
There are matches on the barrel right next to the starting point. When exploring the dark fort, use the lamp or matches. Remember that candles or braziers lit with matches may be extinguished after some time by wind. Finish examining the first room to find more matches in a wooden box.
Use the exit to reach the corridors on the ground floor. There are a number of rooms in the area - you can visit them in any order.
In the central room shown in the picture, you will find a table with three collectibles on it. These are:
- The Fortress: Ifrit Text
- The Fortress: Ghul Text
- The Fortress: Hatif Text
There is one more secret behind the table - The Fortress: Ashen Mother Text.
While exploring the central rooms on the lower level of the fort, you can find an oblong chest containing matches.
In one of the larger rooms in the central part, you will find 4 chests (the picture above). Open them - one of the chests will contain a matchbook. You should also search one of the nearby cabinets to find more matches.
In the same room, you can also find 2 important secrets:
- The Fortress: Poem - the collectible is partially covered by a helmet (picture 1)
- The Fortress: Mathieu's Note - the collectible is lying next to the oil lamp (picture 2)
One of the side rooms in the right part of the ground floor is a kitchen. Check out the stove shown in the picture. Take a heavy vessel out of it to find matches.
Near the kitchen, you can find shelves with various bottles. Next to them, there is a chest marked in the picture. Take the sandbags out of it to reveal a matchbook.
Continue exploring the nearby corridors to reach the lit room shown in the picture above. You can find matches in this area. There is also a secret lying on the chest - The Fortress: Tihanu Note.
Explore the dark room adjacent to the elevator. There, you will find matches and the secret marked in the picture - Hank's Notes: Dr. Anton Metzier.
The elevator puzzle
After exploring the lower level of the fort thoroughly, reach the inactive elevator shown in the picture. Start by picking up the sketch on the ground, which is both a hint for solving the puzzle and a collectible - The Fortress: Crossbow Sketch.
While exploring the ground floor, you have probably noticed a large crossbow - you now need to go back to it. Check out the winch shown in picture 1 and add it to your inventory.
Return to the elevator with the winch and put it in the free slot - you must first select this item from the inventory and then interact with it (picture 2).
That's not all, because you also need to get a plank - you have to stand on it after activating the elevator. The board is to the right of the elevator. You have to place it in a similar way as the one shown in the picture.
Stand on the plank, interact with the winch and hold the interaction button. The elevator will reach the upper floor of the fortress (you will also be able to use it later in the game).
Exploring the fort's upper level
While exploring the first floor, you will encounter a ghoul. However, this won't happen right away. The ghoul's scripted attack will happen later. Search the new area for collectibles.
One of the better-lit rooms on the first floor has is a damaged floor - if you fall down, you will have to use the elevator again. Walk along the wall (picture 1) and crouch to squeeze through the hole. You will reach the room presented in picture 2 - it has a matchbook (open one of the drawers) and Captain's Diary Page x2 (two separate notes lying next to each other).
In one of the dark areas on the first floor, you will find matches shown in the picture - there you can see the radio behind the bars.
While exploring the dark corridors on the upper floor, you will be able to obtain a new document - Hank's Notes: Yasmin Chabani.
A flashback will be triggered in one of the areas on the first floor. There is a crate next to the sleeping cot. The Fortress: Kel Hanan Note lies on it (see the picture).
While exploring the first floor, you will come across stairs leading up. Keep going up the floors until you reach the chest shown in the picture above - the one by the destroyed part of the stairs. After removing the rubbish, you can open the chest and take a matchbook as well as a collectible - The Fortress: Letter to Hazel.
The cannon and weakened floor puzzle, and reaching the radio
The new puzzle is about "building" a cannon and then pushing it towards the weakened floor to gain access to the room with the radio. The aforementioned cannon is shown in the picture above.
Notice a large wheel next to it. Pick it up and insert into one of the two free slots.
Look around for the room with the second cannon and the corpse in front of it. You will find a matchbook and the second wheel shown in the picture. Move it to the cannon and place in the free slot.
Stand behind the cannon and start pushing it. Keep pushing the cannon until it falls through the weakened part of the floor.
Jump into the hole to get to the ground floor. Approach the radio and interact with it to listen to the conversation. The radio will be added to the heroine's inventory.
Escaping from the ghoul and getting saltpeter
Note - If you want to complete the game without too many deaths, save the game here and/or make a copy of your saves. The next sequence can be tough. The game doesn't end when she dies, but it can make it difficult for you to get the Stoic trophy. Take the stairs to the second floor and watch a new flashback. You will find matches in the room with a corpse.
In the next corridor, the heroine will be chased by a ghoul - this is a scripted sequence. Reach the locked door quickly and start moving the sandbags to unlock the passage (picture 1). Run downstairs and reach the exit to the surface (picture 2).
- After that, you can go back into the fort right away - you won't encounter the ghoul.
- If you died, the heroine will "be reborn" next to the radio room. The ghoul will not appear here again either.
In both cases, you have to reach the room on the upper floor where the creature was hiding - it is shown in the picture above. There you will find a matchbook and saltpeter - this is an important quest item.
You can once again go back to the surface - look for a box with a matchbook on the way.
Unlocking the entrance to the arsenal
You will be back in the fort's courtyard. However, this time, it will be a different part of it. Search this area:
- To the left of the exit, you will find two buckets - one of them has matches.
- There are stairs leading towards the upper walls. Check out the container shown in the picture - take all the items out of it to discover another matchbook.
Go back downstairs and head to the area with two tents. Matches are in a crate in the right tent, but you should search them both.
Go to the wreckage of the tank in the courtyard. Check all of its sides to find a hole through which you can squeeze into the driver's cabin. Look around it to find the Arsenal Key. Exit the tank.
The entrance to the arsenal is near the tank (see the picture). Pick up the last matchbook, select the key from the inventory, and use it on the large gate. You will move to a separate location.
