Beginning of a battle in Age of Wonders Planetfall Age of Wonders Planetfall guide, tips

Last update: 26 August 2019

During each game of Age of Wonders: Planetfall, you'll take part in dozens of battles, no matter how pacifistic your approach is. Provided conducting battles can be left to the AI, it is recommended to learn the mechanics of combat, as battles conducted by the player end with fever losses to your military units. This chapter will help you understand the mechanics of combat.

Initiating a battle

Before you enter a battle, it is recommended to check who your up against.

You can begin a battle on the world map by approaching the enemy unit and ordering your army to attack. This will bring up a new window which contains a number of statistics, such as:

  1. Attacker Points - the total number of points from all units belonging to the attacking party. Each unit is defined by a certain amount of points - the higher the number, the more powerful the unit is.
  2. Defender Points - the total number of points from all units belonging to the defending party.
  3. Negotiate - by using Negotiate, you can attempt to convince the other party about the validity of your actions.
  4. Manual Combat - this option enables you to take part in the battle and lead your units to victory.
  5. Auto Combat - this option plays out the battle in the automatic mode. The battle ends in a few seconds but generates much larger losses than in case of manual combat.
  6. Abort Attack - use this option to abort the attack.

Clashes of more than two parties

More than two armies can participate in the battle. - Beginning of a battle in Age of Wonders Planetfall - Battles - Age of Wonders Planetfall Guide
More than two armies can participate in the battle.

In normal conditions, two armies face each other, one attacking and one defending. However, as the situation develops on the world map, there may be a clash of more than two units. To introduce additional units to the battlefield, all you have to do is to place next armies around the target which you're planning to attack and begin the attack.

The window that precedes the battle will show all parties that take part in the battle, along with the number of points generated by all units. A single battle can hold up to 6 full armies, which means 36 single units. Attacking with more than one army has the advantage of simply reducing your losses - in case of some encounters, such as besieging colonies, having more than one army is almost a pre-requirement.

Tips

Here are a few tips that should come in handy when engaging in combat. Here we go:

  1. Pay attention to attacker and defender points. If your opponent is superior to you when it comes to the number of points, consider canceling the attack - if you decide to clash nonetheless, do not use auto-combat.
  2. Choose your enemies based on your point advantage - this will minimize your potential losses.
  3. Remember that you can join the battle with additional armies. In a single battle, there can be up to 6 attacker armies, which equals 36 units on the battlefield. Such an abundance of units makes each battle a piece of cake.
