During Chapter 4 (Protector's Duty) of Plague Tale: Requiem, you'll come across a docks section. Our walkthrough will help you solve the puzzles that involve setting tar on fire and cooperating with a friendly soldier, as well as offer step-by-step instructions how to get through the main area of the docks.

Reach the docks
Amicia, Hugo, and Lucas need to reach the dock area of the city. The path to them is linear and there are a few drops and climbing sections along the way. You'll come across a door.
The building you've just entered has a gate to the sewers that you need to reach and open. The sewer path will lead you to the vicinity of the docks.
Find the Order's boat
Once emerged, turn right and follow the coastline. The area shown in the attached screen contains Gentian - a specimen for Hugo's herbarium.
Once you got the plant, go the other way. The path forward is linear and there are not enemies present here, so you're safe. Turn left and squeeze through the crates. Your goal is to reach the floor hatch and open it.
Once inside, start sneaking, as there are enemies here that can detect and attack you.
Make use of throwables to have an easier time crossing this area. You can also follow the path to the left. You need to get back to the surface - either sneak past the opponent guarding the stairs (you need to distract him) or climb the crates shown in the screenshot above.
Last thing to do before leaving is to lift the boards. You'll enter an abandoned part of the docks. Descend and get close to the guards - suddenly, a huge wave of rats will appear and devour the enemies. The heroes are in a safe zone (lit area), but from now on you need to watch out for rats.
Lucas will remind you that you can use Ignifer to set tar on fire. This will create a huge safe zone. Nevertheless, avoid getting to close to the flames, as you'll take damage.
The next step is to throw an Ignifer round at the wheeled cart. This is a mobile safe zone - start pushing the cart.
You can push the cart in two directions:
- towards the ladder to your left (screenshot above) - this opens up a possibility to climb the upper shelf where a workbench is located, but you're going to have to use up your knife to unlock it.
- straight ahead - simply push the cart to the end of the path. Follow the straight path to continue with the level.
After a while, you'll encounter another swarm of rats. Here you can deal with the problem in a few ways - one of them involves hitting the hanging meat with the slingshot and extinguishing the torch with Exstinguis. Once you're clear, either check out the chest on the right or go straight to the door on the left. You're going to have to cross the house with spilt tar.
You've reached Tar Workshop - a puzzle awaits you here that involves using the tar to scare off rats.
Examine the bars on the left. You can hit the door lock with the slingshot. This will open a path, and there is a crank at the end of it.
Interact with the crank and wait for Lucas to position himself in the right place at the top. Let go of the crank after Lucas says so.
Return to the main area. Lucas will spill the tar after interacting with a large barrel on his floor. You can now set the botttom tank on fire using Ignifer. As the tar burns, run to the next area of the room.
Ask Lucas for ingredients
Turn to Lucas (he is still on the upper floor), hold down the command button (L1/LB on consoles) and ask Lucas to toss the ingredients to you.
You can now mix tar with some of your gadgets. Combine the tar with a pot to create a Tar Pot.
Get back to Lucas
As told, throw the tar pot to the area between two tanks (screenshot above). Once the tar spills, set in on fire with Ignifer. If done correctly, a new path will be unlocked.
At the very end, you need to set the final tank on fire using Ignifer - just aim the throw right. Lucas, Hugo, and Amicia will be reunited.
Before embarking further, check out the balconies that Lucas occupied earlier - a ladder leads to them. At the end of this area, there is a secret chest that contains a tool and crafting ingredients.
Return to Lucas and use the stairs. You will reach the exit door.
Reach the gap and push the knocked down object to create a makeshift bridge. Continue forward.
You will reach an area with barrels and rats swarming the bottom floor. Start with checking out the left crank. The attempt to use it will be unsuccessful, but a friendly soldier will appear - he is going to help you get through this area, and this puzzle is described in the next subsection.
Cooperate with the soldier to cross the dock
Approach the soldier and use the slingshot on the hook next to him.
The bridge nearby will be lowered, and the soldier will be able to get past it.
Your ally will use the crank to raise the first boat and bring a platform with a barrel here. Use the crank to pour the tar out of the first barrel, then set the tank on fire with Ignifer.
After a short conversation, the soldier will raise the second boat. Ask Lucas to use the crank located to the left of where you are standing. The platform in question will move towards the balconies.
Once the platform is in place, ask Lucas to let go of the crank.
The platform with the barrel should be above the second tank. Once again, use the crank to pour out the tar from the barrel and set it on fire.
Time to lift the third boat - this is done using the crank next to it.
Don't let go of the crank and ask Lucas to use the one he's standing by. This will cause the platform with the barrel to start moving again. Wait until it passes you and only then let go of the crank. You can also order Lucas to do the same.
Pour the tar into the last tank and set it on fire.
Lucas will stop at the bottom and look for a solution to the problem. Listen to the soldier's hints. You need to throw a tar pot at the first burning tank (screenshot above). The flames will temporarily ward off the rats and Lucas will once again be on the move.
Use the crank again to raise the final boat. This will allow Lucas to reach the very end of the tank area. You can now rejoin him.
Time to return the favor and help the soldier leave the upper footbridges area. To do that, aim the slingshot at the new hook, and another footbridge will be lowered.
The group will now confront the soldier, who after the conversation, knows who he is dealing with.
- If you don't want to kill the soldier, then throw tar at him. The opponent will be temporarily blinded and you can run past him.
- If you want to get rid of him for good, throw an Exstinguis at his torch. He will be devoured by rats.
After the situation, you can make a short detour:
- as you can explore the balconies that the soldier occupied. There is a small hut there (screenshot above), inside of which there is a secret chest with valuable loot.
- To continue with the story, go left and access a new door.
