The protagonist, similarly to his/her companions, receives experience for performing quests and fighting. Every level advancement allows you to assign one Attribute point (which influences modificators and enhances skills) and one Talent point (combat techniques, passive abilities, or new spells).

Attributes should be developed according to a given character's premise-try to make a character specialize in a given field by developing no more than three Attributes. Be careful about the number of Talents, as well-some of them are replaced by newly unlocked ones, while having too many combat abilities may turn out to be worthless (no more space in the quick access bar). Be even more careful when distributing Talent points for the Fatebinder because (s)he gains access to many talents connected to reputation and loyalty or fear of his companions. Suggestions concerning attribute development for the party members can be found in the Companions chapter.

It's good to know that Skills are developed all the time-every swing with a sword or use of Subterfuge to disarm a trap or open a chest improves them. That's why it is worth it to be inquisitive in dialogues to be able to use one of three dialogue skills: Subterfuge, Athletics, or Lore. It's good to start developing these skills for the protagonist early to increase the number of available solutions in many quests.

Trainers

To improve character development, it's good to use Trainers. You will find them as early as in Disfavored Camp and Scarlet Chorus Camp. When you unlock the Spires, you can also hire new trainers that will be stationed in them all the time. After every level advancement, a character can buy five ranks in a skill in exchange for rings. Therefore, it's worth it to keep some spare rings. It's important to remember about training-as you will notice, every single training provides experience points which means that the character advances to higher levels faster.

Keep in mind that a character regains full health and all wounds are healed on level-up. If you see that a character is on the verge of level advancement in combat, let them fight on.
