Last update: 11 May 2016

There are four types of characters available in the game: commanders commanding armies or fleets, champions training troops and creating unrest among enemy units, dignitaries controlling provinces expansions and spies stealing enemy plans and poisoning their food supplies. You can recruit them by moving the mouse cursor over the province and selecting recruit agent option (4 key).

Each character is characterized by three attributes: authority, cunning and zeal. These attributes have huge impact both on effectiveness of characters' actions as well as defense against enemy agents. The success of chosen action depends on the attribute of your agent and his target. For example, a spy with 5 cunning points will easily poison a general with 1 cunning point, but will have problems eliminating a commander with 8 cunning points.

Since the initial attributes of each character class are different, it is easy to note that spies are extremely effective against champions and champions can easily eliminate dignitaries - Characters | Army - Army - Total War: Rome II Game Guide

Since the initial attributes of each character class are different, it is easy to note that spies are extremely effective against champions and champions can easily eliminate dignitaries. Using the rock-paper-scissors method, dignitaries can easily eliminate enemy spies.

In addition, particular attributes provide additional abilities to all characters:

  • Authority: reduces costs of all actions
  • Cunning: increases line of sight on the map
  • Zeal: increases chance to injure enemy agents in self-defense

As character gains experience levels, he can develop new skills, which not only increases attributes values, but also increases effectiveness of their actions. Spy can increase effectiveness of actions based on cunning and champion - on zeal. Of course, nothing stands on the way to develop your spy in authority tree. Such character will be not only resistant to dignitaries' actions, but also will deal better with enemy spies. In addition following the authority path will unlock a new set of abilities - instead of poisoning food supplies you'll be able to easier stir up the unrest in the enemy province, so a rebellion can be raised there.

All agents can use their abilities in different ways - Characters | Army - Army - Total War: Rome II Game Guide

All agents can use their abilities in different ways. They can use their skills to strengthen friendly province, to weaken enemy province, to attack enemy settlement, to attack an army and its general or to prevent enemy agents' actions. Depending on the target you'll have completely different actions to your disposal, with various success ratios. The individual skills are described in the relevant sections.
