If you have a military alliance with other faction and you both are fighting same enemy, on the diplomacy screen unavailable before buttons will become active. They can be found on the lower left part of the list of countries known to you. Those buttons are the only tool to make coordinated attacks with an ally.

First icon on the left is used for marking any settlement, agent or enemy army visible by you that you are interested in destroying or conquering. Second icon allows you to cancel a marking, and the third zooms the screen to a previously picked target. A marked settlement or army become a priority for your allies. It means that if they are able to, then they will send their armies and fleets against it. What does "they are able to" exactly means is not known as your ally won't tell you when and what forces will he send to help you.

This option allows for two things. First, for indirect control of allied forces in destroying enemy armies or taking strategically important settlements. Although you don't know when an ally will send his forced to a marked place, if he win and what will he do with defeated, but it is still better than nothing. In worst case he will lose and you will be forced to finish his work, which allows you to use a mischievous tactic, in which you wait until your ally attacks an enemy and you wait for the results. If your ally loses, you finish his work. If he wins, then you just achieved success without any losses.

Second, marking an settlement that is currently besieged by your army, gives a small chance of conducting siege with the help of allied units. If an allied army gets close enough, it will automatically become a part of attacking forces. After giving an order to siege your ally won't be asked about anything and will automatically show with you on the battlefield. This opens many additional profits, check the chapter battle -> many sides battles.

Despite possibilities offered by this option, you shouldn't depend on it. You never know when and how large forces will your ally send to help and how will his mission end. If you mark a province that you want to take, it might happen that he gets to it before you. Use it, when you have an opportunity, but don't be surprised of an ally will act not as you wanted.
