Under that icon you will find a list of short and long term winning conditions with information about your progress in achieving them. Content of two first tabs - chapter objectives and mission in progress - will change with new turns, while the last one, victory objectives, is constant till the end of the game. Completed tasks can be recognized by the marker found next to them.

In case of missions with some smaller objectives the marker can relates both to objective as whole, and all its elements as well. It depends on the placement of the marker. If it can be seen near a province to conquer, it means that you have already conquered it. If it is next to a list of provinces to conquer, it means that all of them have been conquered.

Keep in mind that the list of completed tasks can change. No one will take away invented technologies from you, but you can lose conquered provinces or some of your formations, due to what you will no longer met the requirements given by the game. So, it is wise to check from time to time both chapter objectives and victory objectives. It might happen than you no longer met an objective that was for a long time considered as completed.

Chapter objectives

Chapter objectives are divided into two categories - primary and bonus. Primary objective is about surviving till the specific year. Survival periods are short, usually from 5 to 10 years. For completing the primary objective you receive small amount of money and another period, usually slightly longer than the previous one.

Bonus objectives offer small amount of money for meeting various conditions, like training specific amount of units, developing a technology or placing a building. If before the date shown in the primary objective conditions of bonus objective are met, you will receive money. If not, reward is lost.

For reasons above, chapter objectives should be considered as opportunity to gain additional, not large amount of money for current expenses. Especially since some of tasks found there might be hard to accomplish or not suited for your strategy. If, for example, you receive an objective to train 10 formations, to which you don't have access yet, you would need to gather large amounts of money and build the needed buildings. Final costs might be far larger than the profits, especially if completing the objectives will require lots of time, following the schedule or luck. All that needs to happen is not conquering some city on time and province conquering objective might become impossible to accomplish. Additionally, later in the game, when you will receive even ten thousand coins of tax, one or two thousand will be a small addition that won't matter for nation budget at all. Thus, it is good to complete chapter objectives, but they shouldn't be considered as priority.

Active missions

In this category you will find many additional tasks that the game will give you from time to time. You don't need to complete them, but they are greatly rewarded. Mostly with money, but some time and permanent bonuses as well, like to religious influence or technology development speed. Because of that, even if some of those tasks might be hard to complete, in most cases you should think about accomplishing them.

Difficulty level of those missions depends on their type. For example, it is best to ignore all missions that are about killing a specific person or destroying an army. Game doesn't inform you where a specific person or army can be found, which forces you to make reconnaissance It might happen that you are tasked with destroying Roman legion stationed in Spain, while your country consist of Germany and surrounding provinces. You won't learn of enemy strength, so you might face an enemy greatly beyond your current capabilities. Furthermore, you're not alone on the map, so from time to time you will receive message about cancellation of your task as enemy army or character has ceased to exist. In that case, all your efforts focused on finding and eliminating enemy will go to waste. You can try those missions, if game offers nice reward, like permanent boost to army morale, but otherwise it is better to ignore it.

Easier to complete are objectives like building something from a specific category, which are usually rewarded with cash. After receiving a task look for a settlement in which you planned to place such building and do it. Consider reward offered by the game as refund for investment that you planned to do anyway. It works similarly with creating new armies, fleets, recruitment and research. Since sooner or later you were supposed to create new army - and you surely will have to - then you can do it earlier as well. But remember about counting the profits and loss. You shouldn't risk your budget and charter dozens of formations or create earlier buildings that they require, if all you can get for it is one thousand coins.

Victory objectives

There are four groups of objectives - minor victories, military victories, cultural victory and divine triumph. They vary in time limit and list of conditions. Minor victory requires you to survival until year 425 and some other things like conquering a specific province, placing a chosen building or getting your income on specific level. The list depends on faction, but is short and objectives found in it are usually easy to fulfill.

Other victory objectives require you to survival until year 450. Except for that, they are different in details. Military victory has longer list of province to conquer, factions to destroy and military technologies to develop, while cultural victory concentrates on civic technologies, gathering wealth and buildings improving population state. Divine triumph is a connection of previous two multiplied by two. For example, if for achieving military victory you must control 8 provinces, for triumph you need 12. In case of technology their type no longer matters in favor to their amount, and as for buildings, you will need both civic and military ones.

At the beginning you should aim for minor victory. It is easy, and some of its objectives can be found in more advanced wins. Military victory is mostly for large countries, like Western Roman Empire, which due to its since is forced to fight wars, and thus forces you to limit or abandon cultural victory. The latter is best suited for nations that are capable of living peacefully with its neighbors or don't need to focus on building military power. Divine triumph is something you shouldn't bother yourself with at the beginning. Objectives required in it are hard even for experienced players. Consider it as a challenge for veterans.
