Better not to take any lumber. - Equipment selection and location types | Night trips - Night trips - This War of Mine Game Guide
Better not to take any lumber.

After deciding who does what and selecting a place to explore you must choose what equipment should your character take. Weapon and some crowbars or lock picks are necessary. Sadly, at the beginning of the game you probably won't have none of them. You can take some medicaments and food, not to use them yourself, but to trade them. Not every person met will be an enemy, some of them will be neutral toward you and you will be able to trade with them. You shouldn't take any other stuff with you because you won't have place in your equipment for found goods.

After searching a place once you won't gather everything that is there to take. Your equipment size is limited, so it's a good idea to search the same place again later. The game doesn't force you to search different place every night, you actually don't have to walk out of the hideout at night at all. If you don't have healthy people in your group at the moment or you prefer to take care of an injured person, it's better to remain in your hideout.

Descriptions of most locations:

Abandoned Cottage is a forsaken house which you could visit since day one. You can find there many useful items (food, bandages and a broken gun) with no risk of an assault.

Quiet House is available from day one as well. You will find two old people there. If you choose to steal their supplies (a lot of food and medicaments), they will beg for mercy and run to upper floor. If you kill them, it will have negative impact on your group morale.

Ruined Villa is available from day one as well and offers many building materials, food and medicaments. There are two possible situations that you might stumble upon inside - a married couple (husband has a knife) or a group of aggressive soldiers (they have good weapons and bulletproof vest).

Decrepit Squat is a rundown place, where you can find only some building materials, sugar and water. You will meet a homeless person there, who will ask you for something to food. If you help him, he will show you a storage where you will find some jewelry and alcohol. If you won't help him, he will die after a few days.

Shelled School is a place where you could meet a group of neutral homeless people to trade with or a group of aggressive soldiers. There is a lot of roads blocked by bars as well.

City Hospital is a rather friendly location, where ill and injured characters can be healed for free (but only from serious injuries). Inside the hospital you will find some lockers - private and stray. There is a doctor as well, with whom you can trade (he needs food and medicaments, but doesn't offer anything special in return).

Small Apartment Building is occupied by an unfriendly group armed with guns. They have a lot of typical supplies and some damaged bulletproof vest, helmet and rifle.

Supermarket is a heaven for those in need of supplies. There are two possible situations inside - a soldier attacking a women (you can kill him and raise your group morale) or three armed people. They will allow you to search for supplies if you won't get in their way.

Sniper Junction is a very dangerous place, where you can easily die. You must run from one building to another. The trouble is, the place is under observation of a sniper. You must hide behind obstacles and quickly run between the shots. Under the fountain you will meet a guy that will ask for your help. You will have to get to the building, crawl down to the sewers and unlock a passage so that the guy will be able to go to his son. He will give you some items in return. There is also a lot of food and medicaments around the junction.

St. Mary's Church is a church, where a priest and few survivors lives. You can trade with the pastor, but other survivors won't be happy about your presence and they won't allow you to get to the deeper parts of church. If you want to gather some supplies, you must either kill them all (traumatic experience) or travel through the tunnel to the forsaken house nearby, where you will meet a harmless traveler. In both these cases you must have some crowbars and saws to get to the closed locations. Sometimes the church is controlled by bandits and it's impossible to discuss with them.

There's a possibility that before our visit, the inhabitants were killed, and the place is being ransacked by a couple of bandits. In this case, you should have a shotgun with you.

Garage is a place where a son with his ill father lives. He will offer you some tools and weapon parts in exchange for medicaments. If you try to steal from him, there will be a fight (he has a gun).

Hotel is a place where three different situations might occur. You could meet an armed man that will gladly trade some useful items for alcohol, the same man but with aggressive attitude or a neutral traveler, whom won't get in your way.

Shelled Cottage is a safe place, where you can find a lots of food, medicaments and weapon parts. You will need a crowbar.

Ruined Block of Flats is, similarly to Shelled Cottage, a very safe place. The difference is, this time you will need a saw.

Military Outpost is a base full of soldiers. They won't kill you until you try to get inside the complex. One of them will even want to trade with you. If you kill every soldier, you will gain access to many supplies and advanced weapons.

Brothel is an interesting place, where you will meet some neutral bandits eager to trade with you. After unlocking the doors to the basement, you will find two prisoners there. After that you will have to kill the bandits - it's a good idea to loot them and take all the supplies lying around the place.

Construction Site is a complicated place, that changes drastically when you visit it second time. First there are two snipers shooting at some guy - and at you, if you will be in their sight. Second time, the place will be abandoned and the basement, flooded before, now will by dry.

Central Square is a trading oasis, full of many traders. The buildings around are mostly occupied, so trying to steal from someone might not end well for you.

City Hospital is a great location to obtain a lot of meds. Additionally, a clinic is still working, which means that your character can come here at anytime and it will be bandaged for free. If you decide to steal from the hospital, your character will surely become sad.
