During your stay in Driftwood you can find two children, Harriet and Ben Buttons [1] standing on a pier.
Talk to them. You learn that they wait for their friend called Joe. When you ask them more questions about the friend you find out that Joe's mother was taken to Fort Joy and the boy decided to search for her.
A Shark [2], that lies on one of the beaches, can tell you more about the boy's fate. You can speak with it if you want to learn why the creature is in this place. However, it doesn't matter what you learn because you will have to kill it. Inside of its corpse you can find a leg. If you have an elf in your team then eating that leg allows you to learn that it belonged to the boy that you were searching for.
You can now go back to the children and decide what you want to do with this information.
Ending 1: You told the truth
If you tell them that their friend died during his journey to Fort Joy you will sadden them. However, they are very thankful to you that you told them the truth.
Reward: 2 guaranteed rewards + 1 from 4 that you can choose from depending on character's class
Ending 2: You lied to them
After learning the truth, you can lie to the children and tell them that Joe probably reached Fort Joy.
