Combat Mafia II Guide

Last update: 11 May 2016

There are two major additions to combat in Mafia II. The most important addition by far is the cover system which comes in handy in almost every situation. The only real exception is the lowest difficulty setting, because it allows to perform dangerous maneuvers without having to worry about Vito's health. On the normal difficulty setting even a short burst can kill Vito and on the highest difficulty setting ignoring this feature is virtually impossible. The second important addition is the automatic healing system which replaced collecting medical supplies. You shouldn't have any problems figuring out how this system works - you'll have to remain behind cover or in a safe area for a few seconds, so that Vito will regain full health. Make sure not to be interrupted, because even a single hit will stop the healing process.

A very important thing when it comes to winning fights is having good weapons. There are a lot of gun stores in Empire Bay and you could visit them to gather supplies. It's not mandatory, however, because all the best weapons can be found by examining bodies of fallen enemies. You also won't have to worry about going on a mission without a gun, because even if you've started the chapter without a weapon you'll probably receive one from Joe or someone else involved in the assignment. Don't forget to always explore the area where you're fighting, because in some cases you may discover armories or small stashes. Using grenades and Molotov cocktails during the game is highly recommended, because they're very effective in dealing with larger groups of enemy units. You should also remember about the possibility of blowing up cars by shooting at their fuel tanks. Most of the tanks can be found on the left side and usually a single hit will be enough to cause an explosion.

An important aspect of combat is the radar which shows positions of enemy units. The radar is located in the lower right corner of the screen and you should check it often, preventing enemies from making surprise attacks and finding gangsters trying to hide from you.

You will be accompanied by allies in a lot of missions (usually it's Joe) and thankfully you won't have to worry about them, because they can't die. You can't use this to your advantage and hope that they will get rid of all enemies for you. They may be able to take out single enemy units, but sooner or later they'll start shooting at the rest without any results. This means that winning most of the battles will up to you and they're only to provide a little help.
