The Discovery Points are a bit similar to experience points from role-playing games. Collecting more Discovery Points provides more powerful spells (actually, I didn’t notice anything has changed). Also, you can collect them whenever you want to. However, the main question is: how to find them?
The main rule is simple: you have to stick your nose anywhere you can (and also where you cannot). Talk to the paintings, cast various spells on highlighting items (sometimes you have to repeat it few times!), light the torches, clean up, etc. Pressing C on your keyboard might be helpful too – you will see how many percent of the points you’ve found in certain area and the items which have to be used in order to gather more points (they pulse in this view).

Have you completed 97% of the game or of the Discovery Points in general? Either way, well done! :)
Best things to do to gain Discovery Points now are:
-Clean Up Hogwarts: Repair things, clean dirty tiles, light all unlit lamps ect.
-Retrace your steps: Anything you have already gained points from should be re-checked. I managed to find another group of points under the carpets on the Fifth Floor near the Clock Tower upon a second visit.
-Win all mini-games: Wizard Chess, Gobstones and Exploding Snap Pairs will give you a decent reward of points when you win.
-Talk to any objects that are highlighted: The gargoyles are your best bet.
-Cast a spell at pretty much everything: The Great Hall and Trophy Room have many points within if you look for them. Cast Wingardium Leviosa/Accio at all the dining tables and food will appear. Each table gives you points.
-Cast Accio at the Hogwarts House Points tubes and the House Flags will change in the Great Hall, you will be rewarded.
-Clean the two trophies next to the duster in the Trophy Room and again, you will be rewarded.
-Cast at Knights: You may have to do it a few times, but you will get some points
-Bump into every Bird/Owl you see: They tend to be sitting on points. The most points are located by Hagrid's Hut around his Pumpkin Patch and at Stone Circle.
-Destroy the bookshelf in the Viaduct: Next to the Portrait in the Viaduct Entrance there is a large book shelf. Cast Reducto at it several times to break it, you will gain points, then cast Reparo at it to fix it.
-Destroy Myrtle's Bathroom: Break all the toilets and the doors with Accio.
-Destroy Hospital Wing: Cast at the bed-side curtains for points.
-Head back to the Owlery: You've helped Colin send the Howlers, so now you can climb up the Owlery walls. You will come into contact with more Owls and Birds who will be holding points. Knock them to gain more.
-Check Hogwarts Roofs: As you can climb, have a look around the tops of the Paved Courtyard, you may find some more there.
-Lay the bed sheets in the Gryffindor Boy's Dormitory: Cast at the beds to make them, also cast at Neville's bed and table.
-Talk to Portraits: They sometimes will release points after completing tasks for them.
-Talk to other Students: It doesn't always work but you may meet the odd few who gain you some points.
