[Mission 01] Contact! - Warm-up  (5/91)

Threats: The first part of the mission is very simple. It should be treated as a standard tutorial section. You must be careful, though. Some of the first enemy soldiers will appear on the map very soon. You have to be ready for them. Remember to move slowly. Otherwise you might have some serious problems noticing them. If you’ve chosen one of the higher difficulty settings, it would be equal to an instand death. There are some guys equipped with rocket launchers later in this mission. You will also have to deal with several sniper units. Remember to use the tactical view in order to see where they’re hiding.

Main objective: Once you’ve safely reached the ground, you will have to rejoin with the rest of your team. ‘Ghost’ members are located throughout the whole sector. Thankfully, you will be able to see where they’re standing. Once you’ve completed this objective, you’ll make a contact with Ramirez in order to receive new orders.

Walkthrough: You start off inside a plane (#1). There’s nothing to do here, so you might as well look around a bit. The computer will control all of your movements. You will leave the plane in just a few seconds. This is a great opportunity to take a closer look at the city (#2). Lovely, isn’t it? :-)

You will get closer to the ground in just a few seconds (#1). Don’t worry, the parachute is going to be used automatically. CHECKPOINT 1. Get ready, because you will land on a freeway very soon. The game will display some of the first hints very shortly. It would be wise to start reading them (#2). First of all, you’ll learn how to move your character. It is imperative that you practice taking some of the different stances – standing, crouching or lying on the ground. Peeking 'round corners is also very important.

A new icon will appear on your screen very shortly. You should familiarize yourself with it. It will tell you an exact distance to your current destination. Bear in mind that in some situations a few icons will appear simultaneously. It means than you can proceed to these spots in any order. You should be getting closer to a huge truck (#1). Press the CTRL button in order to lie down on the ground. Start moving under the truck (#2). You’ll do it much faster if you press the SHIFT button. After that, get up and start moving forward.

You should be able to reach a small platform very soon. Turn right and start moving towards a lower floor (#1). The game will display your first objective here.

I am confused about how to control the other members of the team. The game guide on the disc says use X or F1 to get the member to execute the action you've specified in the reticule menu. But other than for "follow" I haven't been able to detect that the other members of the team react to the order I've given in the reticule menu at all using either command. What actually causes the team member to execute the command. Also the guide (from the disc) says "Mouse wheel down" causes actions to take place. All that ever happens if I CLICK the mouse wheel down is that I get a BLUE menu bar and outline of a black screen that says GRAW in the upper left corner. So how does that actually work??? Or do I have some settings that need to be reset. I haven't changed anything from the default control settings. Do these controls actually work if they are used on the tactical map??? How does one use them in that case??? I guess you only get to specially equip your weapons after completing the first mission. A silencer would be most useful, but I guess you don't have that available until after the first mission. Is that correct??? Thanks for the great guide.

I built a computer 2 years ago that was top of the line that cost me $2200 to build. By todays standards I might as well be dusting off my Colecovision ADAM computer and trying to run GRAW on. It seems so dated now. I have 1 gig of RAM, a 2.7 gig 32 bit chip and a geforce 5900, and I get the same problem that you guys are getting. It's not right. My system ran HL2 pretty well so I figured it should at least run this on low... Wrong! Time for a new Video Card.
