The Battle for Hill 400  (27/28)

TIME AND PLACE: December 8, 1944; Bergstein

YOU ARE: Corporal Bill Taylor

This is one of the most challenging missions of the game. You will have to defend this hill against enemy attacks. You start off inside the central bunker. One of the Allied soldiers will arrive here shortly. He will inform you about the incoming German forces (screen 1). Leave the bunker. First of all, you will have to take care of the enemy mortar crews (screen 2). Thankfully, you’ve got a sniper rifle.

Thankfully, you will be able to see mortar positions on your compass. You can also look for the additional smoke (screen 1). You don’t have much time to take care of a single mortar crew, however headshots are most welcome. You must neutralize all targets (screen 2). Watch out for additional enemy soldiers.

You will have a few seconds to arm yourself with a decent gun (screen 1). Head on to the nearby crates. I would recommend picking up a heavy machine gun (BAR), because there will be a lot of close combat situations. The top of the hill is going to be bombarded by an enemy artillery. You have to get out of here. All hideouts should be visible on your compass (screen 2). If you don’t know where to go, try following one of the Allied soldiers.

You can go back to the central bunker. The first wave of enemy soldiers will appear on the western side of the hill. Bear in mind that the Germans will deploy some smoke grenades in order to blind you (screen 1). This will make killing them a lot harder, because you won’t have much time to score a good shot. I wouldn’t recommend staying by the heavy machine gun post for too long. The second wave will attack from the south-west (screen 2).

The third wave is coming from the north (screen 1). Don’t forget about the carried grenades. I’d recommend throwing them at larger groups of enemy soldiers. It would also be wise to check your ammo supplies frequently. Remember that you can always pick up one of the MP-40’s. Enemy armored vehicles will be coming from the south-west. You’ve got four options:

A) take out their shooters (sniper rifle)

B) use one of the rocket launchers (challenging...)

C) blind them with a smoke grenade (it won’t last for too long, though)

C) ignore them for the rest of the battle. If you choose this option you will have to remember to avoid this part of the map.

I would recommend staying close to the western side of the bunker (screen 1), mostly because of larger groups of enemy soldiers. Don’t forget to use your grenades. A countdown will begin very soon. You will have to defend the top of the hill for about five minutes. Start running towards one of the possible covers (screen 2), because enemy artillery has awaken itself again.

Get back to the central bunker. Start shooting at the visible enemy soldiers (screen 1). The Germans will be coming from north and west. If you have some smoke grenades at your disposal, now would be the best time to use them (screen 2). Thanks to that, you will be able to blind some of the snipers and the armored vehicles. Concentrate your efforts on soldiers equipped with machine guns.

An enemy tank will arrive here shortly. Wait for him to get to the top of the hill. Now you will have to surprise him from one of the flanks (screen 1). Set a charge in a highlighted spot. Move back (watch out for additional enemy units!!) and enjoy the fireworks (screen 2). Get back to the entrance. Remember that you must protect it at all costs.

You will be encountering massive enemy forces. The Germans will be attacking mostly from the western side of the hill (screen 1). Don’t forget to use your grenades during these fights. A second tank will arrive. You’ve got to get rid off him swiftly (screen 2).

You’ve got to survive only a few more attacks. After that, Allied planes will appear over the hill (screen 1). The enemy forces will begin to retreat. Go to your squad leader and listen to what he’s got to say (screen 2). Get ready for the final mission of the game!

You need to go into the bunker because the Germans use artillery.

this is really annoying - I snipe all the mortar teams so there are none left on the radar - there are literally NO mortar teams anywhere to be seen.. but it wont give me my next objective, it just says snipe the mortar teams.. so i went round about 10 times killing all the germans and looking for more mortar teams. there were NONE... but the level will just not move on. what am i meant to do!?

I played on the hardest (veteran if I remember correctly) and this level was a bit of a bitch. When running around to take out the mortars you need to stop once in awhile so your allies catch up with you. Otherwise you have to fight all the incoming Germans alone. The last part was the hardest, running around like crazy, shooting at almost everything that is moving and dodging grenades. It is imortant to try to take out the incoming Germans as fast as possible otherwise they will bombard you with grenades.

this level is really, really tough. i played on the second hardest level, and i died about 50 times before i got it :) can't concentrate only on the mortar people, you need to switch your gun quite frequently. run around the perimiter.
finally!!!

About what Ichshabeinen said, I have also experienced this. (was playing around on easy) My allies stood right outside the bunkers shooting and I went in the bunker as far as i could and went prone. Suddenly grenades started coming in and I ran out and saw my allies still keeping the germans in check and from a distance AND from an angle. So unless some german threw a homing grenade that made a 90º turn... This is just wierd. But i suppose the scripters couldn't think of another way to prevent proning there the entire lvl and just fixating your aim on teh entrance like how all the other germans did when they were in the bunkers...

Well, the first time I'm playing the COD series I went over on this particular level to the easy difficulty, it was impossible to get through the mortars part, was totally frustrated

Go around the edges of the barbwire fence and snipe the mortar teams only cut across to the next mortar team if you need to and take them in the order they appear. After that I ran into a strategy that seemed to work for me as far as holding the hill after the mortar teams. I just basically ran back and forth from the back of the bunker to the front and it never spawned any Germans behind me. Basically I would run to the back shoot three or so Germans then run to the front (rinse lather repeat). Destroyed the tiger tank in the back of the bunker with one of the rocket launchers with about a minute left and it gave me my last checkpoint right before the mission ended. I actually got through Hill 400 pretty easy using this method. It was D-Day that forced me to hurl my controller.

I noticed that if you tried to hide in the central bunker in amytime...frag grenades land in your position and when I went out...there's no one there...weird

When shooting, try strafing...the tubby ones are really bad at aiming.

When ur defending it from the waves of attackers, use your smoke grenades to make a wide arc around the front area of the bunker. You should have 4 smokies, then there are 8 i think layin on crates to pick up. the germans run around blindly in the smoke and when they come through are disoriented and easy to pick off. It worked great for me. I just hide in the trench for cover & pop out evrynow & then to snipe.

Wow!, what a level!. So hard so funny so interesting, I tried several times before got all the mortar died (in veteran mode), the last part, was not that difficult, just try to survive between checkpoints. . .
